The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the ongoing struggle between
Israelis and Palestinians that began in the mid-20th century. The
conflict is wide-ranging, and the term is sometimes also used in
reference to the earlier sectarian conflict in Mandatory Palestine,
between the Jewish and the Arab population under British rule. It
has been referred to as the world's “most intractable conflict”.
As we know for the majority of the 20th century since the
inception of the new Turkish Republic, Turkey maintained minimal
relatins with the newly independent nation-states in the Middle
East. However this politics has changeed soon.
On the Palestinian problem Turkey advocates a two-state
solution that would result in a viable and sustanaible Palestinian
state. It believes that the SC ought to take more roboust action against
Israel’s aggressive policies towards Palestinians. This question is a
central issue at both the state and society level in Turkey. Thousands
of Turkish people protested the Israeli aggression against the Pales-
tinians in Gaza in different parts of Turkey. Turkish PM Erdoğan
responded to the Israeli action by labeling it an act of disrespect to
Turkey and suspended Turkey’s facilitating role for indirect talks
between Israel and Syria. Erdoğan also initiated an intensive diplo-
matic campaign at the regional and international levels, utilizing
Turkey’s seat in the United Nations Security Council. Turkey calls
for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, and urges a
compromise between Palestinian groups. Finally, the war on Gaza

will have far-reaching consequences for the future of the region as
well as for Turkish-Israeli relations.
After a terrible mistake by Israeli administration which was
attacking turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan blamed
Israel for the human tragedy in Gaza. This response may not seem
extraordinary if we remember how he criticized Israel in the same
way in response to former Israeli aggressions in the occupied
territories. This time, however, Erdoğan stated that the attack on
Gaza, which began four days after the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud
Olmert’s visit to Ankara, “is an act of disrespect toward Turkey”.
The major issue on the meeting agenda for Olmert’s visit was the
Turkish-led, indirect talks between Israel and Syria. In response to
the latest Israeli attack, Erdoğan suspended the talks, and paid
visits to Jordan, Syria, Egypt and Saudi Arabia to search for a
solution to the Gaza situation. He also talked to the President of
the Palestinian Authority, Mahmud Abbas. Erdoğan’s response to
Israel, his suspension of talks, and his increase of shuttle diplo-
macy in the Middle East indicates the high level of Turkish invol-
vement in the Palestinian question.
Erdoğan said at that time that “Turkey has the capacity to
help the Palestinians after the redeployment in the economic field”.
This capacity is best exemplified by the initiative of the Union of
Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey.
Turkey should be ready to assist in the reconstruction in
Gaza after a possible settlement. There is need for coordinating
activity which includes charities, universities. Turkey should invite
Palestinian students for education to strengthen ties between
Turkey and Palestine.
