Tybalt picks a fight with Mercutio and his friends, and Mercutio is accidentally killed when Romeo steps in to try and break up the fight. Romeo pursues Tybalt in anger, kills him and is banished by the prince for what he has done. Juliet worries that Romeo is late to meet her and learns about the fight from her nurse. With the help of Friar Lawrence, Romeo arranges to spend the night with Juliet before taking refuge in Mantua. To assuage the family's grief over Tybalt's death, the day of Juliet's wedding to Paris is pushed forward. Capulet and his wife are angry that Juliet does not want to marry Paris, not knowing about her secret contract with Romeo. Monk Lawrence helps Juliet by providing a sleeping potion that will make everyone think she is dead. Then Romeo will come to her grave and take her away. When the wedding party arrives to welcome Juliet the next day, they think she is dead. The friar sends a colleague to warn Romeo to come to the Capulet family monument to save his sleeping wife, but the message doesn't go through and Romeo, hearing that Juliet is dead instead, buys poison from Mantua. He returns to Verona and goes to the grave, where he surprises and kills the grieving Paris. Romeo takes the poison and dies just as Juliet wakes up from her drugged sleep. She learns what happened from Friar Lawrence, but refuses to leave the tomb and stabs herself to death when the Monk returns with the Prince, Capulet, and Father Romeo. The death of their children forces the families to make peace, promising to erect a monument in their memory.
