Conflicts of interest

 Semmes–Weinstein monofilaments are recom-

mended for testing sensory perception in the digits of workers by the 

HSE in Guidance on Hand-arm Vibration (L140). Quantitative sen-

sory tests of thermal and vibration perception are undertaken at HSE’s 

Science and Research Centre in Buxton for which a fee is charged.



Ethical approval

  This work was reviewed and approved by the HSE 

research ethics committee operating under delegated authority from 

The University of Sheffield Medical School Research Ethics Commit-

tee (HSL_ERAC_10022016). Informed consent was obtained from all 

subjects included in the study.
