QUESTIONS BOOK @FunEnglishwithme

Arguments in Favour
Television is not only a convenient source of entertainment, but also a comparative cheap one.
Television keeps you informed about current events, science and politics.
Many television programs introduce people to things they have never thought or heard of before.
Television series have done a great job in popularizing many literary masterpieces.
Television has been good company to those who do not work, like housewives, lonely old
people, etc.
Television provides enormous possibilities for education.
Television unites the world. It brings most distant countries and the strangest customs right to
you.
Compared with radio, everything on television is more lifelike, vivid, and real.
In the case of serious problems television tells people what to do.
People can be informed about special sales at stores.
Debate Topics - Regulating Violence in the Media
Yes, The Government Needs to Regulate the Media
Violence begets violence.
Children copy the violence seen on TV and in films.
It is the responsibility of the government to take corrective measures when a situation becomes
dangerous.
It seems like there are only violent TV shows anymore.
Media glorifies violence and sends the wrong message.
By giving so much importance to violence, the media encourages crazy people to be violent in
order to get a lot of attention.
What is more important to the growth of our society: A murder or a good school teacher? Who
gets more coverage in the media?
Media is cynical and only worried about making money. The only way things will change is if
the government intervenes.
Does all this violence improve your life in any way?
No, The Government Should Leave the Media Deregulated
Have you ever heard of the right to 'Free Speech'.
The Media only reflects what society as a whole does.

It is quite obvious that these films are made for entertainment purposes and anyone can tell the
difference between a film and reality.
Governments only make matters worse by introducing bureaucracy - they don't really improve a
situation.
True change needs to come from within and not be imposed from without.
We need to be kept informed about the true nature of the society that we live in.

you more aware of and caring for others?

taking drugs or catch the AIDS virus, or should they leave them alone to find out about these
things themselves? What are the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches?
What do you think is the best age to be? Explain your opinion.
Most countries give young people rights as they reach a certain age. For example, British people
can legally make love or fight for their country at the age of 16; they can drink, vote and drive a
car when they are 18. Does China have similar laws? Do you think that any of the age limits
need changing?
Some people think you should give something to society before you have the right to join it.
Should young people have to do some form of military or community service by law?
Should people of between 50 and 55 be forced to retire from their jobs in order to make way for
younger workers?
If people are still able to (and want to) work, should they have to retire when the reach a certain
age? Explain your opinion.

though women live longer than men on average. Why do you think this is? Is this fair, or should
it be changed?
Are there many things that the old can teach the young or are they hopelessly out of touch by the

have they been useful to you in your life?

school? Explain your opinion.

advanced in years. Do you think that older people make better leaders? Explain your opinion.

buildings in your country provide easy access for the disabled or are your towns and cities
designed mainly for the young and able-bodied? Why is this?
Should the elderly be expected to pay for residential care out of their own savings or should
appropriate accommodation and nursing be provided by the tax payer? Explain your opinion.

Do you agree? Explain your opinion.
In most countries women live an average of five to six years longer than men. Why do you think
this is?
In some countries having children is considered a way of "investing in the future", and young
people are expected to give money to their parents when they get a job, and then to care for them
when they retire. What are the good points and what are the bad points about this system?
Many countries are facing the problem of an "aging population", i.e. there will soon be more old

them?
