A Neglected Cultural Tourism Area in Sinop Shores: Gebelit
Abstract
The Gebelit neighborhood of Tarakçı village, located on the shores of Sinop-Ayancık coast, on
the border of Ayancık district, is a small coastal settlement built on the banks of the stream with
the same name. Gebelit with a total population of 211 is one of the five neighborhoods of Tarakçı
village. The local economy is based on small-scale agriculture and fishery, while a small fish
restaurant by the sea and domestic tourism are also served locally and limitedly. The settlement
that can be considered as a small tourism destination on the seaside, with daily tourist attractions
has an important cultural heritage which is not noticed. This small fishery settlement reflects the
old term of Ottoman State with some ruins and gravestones. The old mosque was abandoned after
the construction of the new mosque, but it is registered as a cultural heritage in 2015. There is a
small cemetery in the garden of mosque that some gravestones are noticed in the context of art
history. A stream passes by the mosque and the cemetery. This stream sometimes causes flood.
So the natural topography is distorted.Another cultural heritage in the neighborhood is the remains
of an old building that can shed light on the economic relations of the late Ottoman State. These
remains, which were registered in 2015, are the remnants of the former Düyun-ı Umumiye build-
ing. There is a mound dated to the early Bronze Age in the neighborhood. This mound also shows
that the region is an important settlement area throughout history. The cultural heritage of Gebelit
isn’t known even in Sinop. ıt is only known as a gastronomic center famous with fish meals. In
this paper, Gebelit will be evaluated as cultural heritage center and local touristic center with a
sustainable understanding.

Medresesi’dir. Medreseler, geçmişteki kullanımlarında dini eğitim veren kurumlar olarak nitelen-
dirilmektedir. Ancak, günümüzde bu kullanımını yitirmiştir. Şu anda kültürel benliğini yitirme-
mesi amacıyla el sanatları çarşısı ve kafe olarak kullanımı sürdürülmektedir. Çalışmanın amacı;
turistlerin bakış açısıyla pervane medresesinin turizm amaçlı kullanımının, sosyo-kültürel etkisi-
nin ve verimliliğinin değerlendirilmesidir. Araştırma kapsamında; Sinop merkezde Selçuklu Dö-
nemine ait yer alan, iki eyvanlı ve açık avluya sahip Sinop Pervane Medresesi incelenecektir.
Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgular neticesinde kamu kurumlarına, özel sektöre bazı önerilerde
bulunulacaktır.
