CASE 23
Professor and baby carriage
The burly Texan, a professor of German, had planned a sabbatical for a business trip to Germany. He was thrilled to have the chance to do research in Germany, and the fact that he would be alone in an unfamiliar country did not interest him at all. Upon arrival in Germany, the professor became close to a group of people, mainly teachers and officials, who, in his opinion, could help him in researching the cultural traditions that characterize the Germans. Few people seemed interested in his project.
Every day he lost his enthusiasm. 30 After several months of unsuccessful attempts to launch his project, he began to blame other people for their cold attitude, and moreover, for their obstructionism. He felt that the people he talked to were trying to belittle his efforts because he was an American. Very soon he began to consider all Germans the source of his troubles. The hostility grew day by day. He usually ate alone, then returned to his office and reflected on his failures. What will he tell his university colleagues when he returns to Texas? How will he justify himself to the dean?
The turning point came one afternoon a few months later. He was walking down the street, carrying a bulky briefcase in his hand, when a German housewife accidentally blocked his path with a baby stroller. Another German on his way! This infuriated him and he swung his briefcase at the woman. This reaction weakened him so much that, afraid of causing physical harm to anyone, he locked himself in his room and did not leave there for the rest of the business trip, almost six months.
Please analyze the described situation from the perspective of intercultural management. Give recommendations on how to avoid such situations.
CASE 24
Ethical Dilemma In a cardboard box on the corner of the table are photographs and other personal items that John will take with him after 16 years with the company. He recalls the rich memories of working at the company, and a smile plays on his face. Like many companies today, Lovercraft Importers has undergone layoffs and many longtime employees must leave. After two years of waiting his turn, John is glad his wait is over. He is ready to start a new activity that will renew his passion for work. He takes a document from Jiang Silk Inc., a Chinese export company, and quickly skims the familiar contents of the paper.
This document represents the result of six months of negotiations on a project that John personally supervised, which ultimately led Lovercraft to a major contract. He is proud of a job well done and, in addition, remembers with pleasure the foreign friends he made during the negotiations. And then he discovers that the final text of the contract, completely drawn up, in which only his signature and the signature of the head of the partners are missing, contains some significant error.
Despite efforts to ensure clear and accurate communications between the two businesses, the agreement drafted by JiangSilk Inc. contains a translation error that will cost the Chinese company thousands of dollars. John knows that if he shows this discrepancy to his boss, he will still order him to sign the contract, since his company cannot afford the delay. John is exhausted from this fruitless activity. He knows that all he has to do is sign his name, pick up his box and head to the door, and all this fuss will be behind him. John feels at a crossroads.
Question: What would you do?
