EPIGRAPHIC MONUMENTS OF MEDIEVAL AGSU TOWN
(XVIII CENTURY ARABIAN AND PERSIAN
INSCRIPTIONS IN TOWN CEMETERY)
There are four cemeteries around medieval Agsu town. Many graves
accompanied by sufficiently immence tombstones in each of them draw attention
at first sight. Arabian and Persian epitaphs assuming great importance historically
were worked out inside those tombstones. The epitaphs were for the first time read
in initiative of Agsu Archaeological Expedition. The cemetery in north part of the
town started to be investigated first and therefore was fixed as cemetery No. 1 and
cemetery in east direction was fixed as No. 2. The epitaphs were worked out
mainly due to that classification. Thus, we present them to readers in consistency.
Insriptions about cemetery No. 1: Inv. No. 49. Height of a tombstone
from local mountain kind is 1.62 meter, and width is 0.49 m. The name and date of
death of deceased were scraped in Arabian naskh script inside the especially hewed
vault on the tombstone. Translation is: "This grave belongs to the deceased (late),
obtained mercy (pardoned by God for his sins) Haji Shaban". Year: 1191 by Hijrah
calendar = 1777 by Christian chronology. The edges of the inscription were
engraved completely with ornament "Arabian islim" (a flower and a leaf on a wavy
line). A description of lined up poppy (tulip) was scraped in back part of
tombstone. A side part of the gravestone of 0,28 width is patterned chain with
four-cornered geometrical ornaments. The grave has no breast stone.

hewed in a form of tulip and has no ornament over it. Epitaph and date of deceased

1191 by Hijrah calendar 1777 by Christian chronology. Back and side parts of the
tombstone are simply hewed. Three depictions of four-cornered geometry were
scraped over the tombstone (1.17x0.47 m).

metrical ornaments were patterned over the tombstone (1.80x0.46 m).
