Meeting of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan 

Ilham Aliyev with the President of the European 

Parliament Josep Borrel Fontelles

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev arrived in the European Parliament, No-

vember 7.

The Azerbaijani  President  had  a  meeting  with  the  President  of  the  European 

Parliament Josep Borrel Fontelles.

After the talks, Mr. Fontelles hosted a lunch in honor of the Azerbaijani leader.

Members of the European Parliament and a number of EU high-ranking officials 

attended the lunch.

Political briefing at the Royal Institute

 for International Relations 

November 7, 2006

Political briefing was held at the Royal Institute for International Relations, No-

vember 7. 

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev was sincerely met by the director-general of 

the Institute Claude Mission and other officials.

In  the  discussion  themed  “EU-Azerbaijan:  cooperation  in  energy  and  other 

spheres” ambassadors of several countries to Brussels, permanent representatives to 

international organizations, public figures of Belgium, influential politicians, political 

scientists, representatives of international organizations, including the Council of the 

EU, the European Parliament, were present.

The Royal Institute for International Relations, established in 1947, is non-gov-

ernmental organization and is considered the major think tank of Belgium. It pays 

special attention to EU, studies integration, security and Middle East issues.

Director-general of the Institute Claude Mission thanked President Ilham Aliyev 

for attending meeting and said: we are very glad that the young head of state pos-

sesses great experience, as well as in economy.

Then, participants were widely informed of biography of President Ilham Aliyev.

President Ilham Aliyev addressed the briefing. He thanked for invitation, informed 

of very effective meetings he held in Brussels, noting cornerstone was laid for future 

development of cooperation between Azerbaijan and EU. Saying Azerbaijan prefers 

integration  to  Europe,  President Aliyev  talked  of  military  aggression  of Armenia 

against Azerbaijan and its heavy consequences. He said despite crisis in the first years 

of independence Azerbaijan managed to protect its statehood, implement political 

and economic reforms. In this work the EU helped us, the President mentioned.

Noting importance of cooperation with EU for Azerbaijan in frame of new neigh-

borhood policy Azerbaijani President said the EU also will take its benefit. The Presi-

dent said Azerbaijan conducts open door policy, effective environment is provided for 

foreign investors and for economic development. Azerbaijan has the highest figure 

worldwide and Azerbaijan is being changed into the leader state of the region, he 

firmly noted.

Talking  in  detail  of Armenia-Azerbaijan,  Nagorno-Karabakh  conflict  President 

Ilham Aliyev declared once again the fair vision of Azerbaijan. He noted the main 

reason why the problem is not settled is disobedience of Armenia to international law 

and its separatist policy.

Then, President of Azerbaijan answered questions of the briefing participants.

receives the EU Special Representative for 

the South Caucasus Peter Semneby

February 17, 2007

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received the EU Special 

Representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby, February 17, Presidential 

Palace.

Successful development of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the European 

Union and a number of other issues of mutual interest were discussed at the meet-

ing.

The sides expressed their satisfaction on the level of EU-Azerbaijan cooperation 

in energy security. 

They shared their views on the prospects of cooperation.

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev 

meets with the President of the European Commission 

Jose Manuel Barroso in Brussels 

April 28, 2009

As part of his working visit to Belgium, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev 

met with the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso. 

On  energy  cooperation, Barroso  hailed Azerbaijan`s  contribution to  Europe`s 

energy security. Barroso said the expansion of the Azerbaijan-EU relations shows 

how much emphasis the country places on European values. The President of the 

European  Commission  stressed  the  importance  of  implementing  more  concrete 

joint projects in future.

The Azerbaijani leader said his country will continue its integration towards Eu-

rope. 

The Head of State also stressed Azerbaijan`s economic successes, adding the 

country contributes to economic cooperation and security in the region. 

President Ilham Aliyev also expressed his confidence that the EU-Azerbaijan 

relations would continue to develop.
