constitute the concept out of the context for the design. In the reciprocity state, the context and
the concept have a close relation. In this state, context and concept correspond by equaling to
each other. It seems like it came into being by itself and it has always been there. In the conflict
state, on the other hand, the architectural concept conflicts with context consciously and stra-
tegically. The form is produced through the contrasts that emerge from the conflict. Conflict
can be defined as the phenomenon that obstructs and distorts what is normal. While the conflict
that the state creates with the existing contextual conditions can be functional and formal; and
as a result of these, it can also lead to a conflict in the social and cultural dimension as well. In
this study, it is attempted to make evaluations on the compounds of
concept and the relation of
context to concept, through discussion regarding the samples. As
a result of the evaluations;
a) It has been determined that the design concept can only be achieved through designer’s in-
terpretation of the notions related to the problem and the context,
b) That different concepts can be realized for
the same problem and context,
c) That the context can be included to the concept through the designer’s objective evaluation
and subjective interpretation, and that some of the objective evaluations can directly become
designing input, while some of them can become the notions that constitute the concept with
the interpretation of the designer.
With these determinations, it becomes certain that architecture cannot be independent from the
place; but how the environmental conditions will influence the design depends on the unique
interpretation of the designer. In addition to all of these, it has been concluded that an original
and creative architecture can be attained by means of the concept that is achieved through the
context and the other components.

dair okuma, izleme, bilgilendirme eylemleriyle beraber

Abstract: The act of symbolizing people, structures,
events, concepts and objects for various reasons is a
product of culture and this product is called monument.
Monumental architectural factors can represent vari-
ous concepts, memories, legends, traditions and even
real events. The monumentalization of the tombs occur
in order to keep the memories of the important person
or people fresh and to keep them alive. Events took
place on 2 July 1993 in remembrance of Pir Sultan Ab-
dal held in the Madımak Hotel in the center of Sivas.
This event where 33 people lost their lives in the hotel
passed down to our history as ‘Madımak Incident’. The
aim of this project is to design a memorial park that
has qualifications of a monumental memory for those
people who lost their lives during the Madımak Inci-
dent on 2 July 1993. The study area is Ortaköy, in the
Şarkışla district of the Sivas City. The method of this
study is based on project design processes. The main
concern of the memorial park designed to commemo-
rate the events of 2 July, is the idea that the lives of
those who lost their lives will be kept alive forever in
this space and converted into a symbolic monument
that houses the spirit of 33 lives. As a result, designed
field uses and the functions that provide various active
and passive recreation together with reading, monitor-
ing, informing actions on the cultural aspects of the
Alevism and Bektashism are gained. A memorial park
is fictionalised that allows socialization of people, shar-
ing of cultures, the feelings of peace, friendship, toler-
ance and brotherhood are reinforced. In this respect, it
is aimed to keep this event which left deep traces in the
society, fresh on the minds of people, and to design this
place to be used every day, not just during the com-
memorations.
