In addition, we should know that there are some idioms which cannot be understood in
some regions. It is possible; they have never heard these idioms.
Idioms are used in poetry. We can express our thought with very few words. They keep
the meanings, and we can learn that culture with idioms, as well.
HOW TO REDUCE TTT AND INCREASE STT IN EFL CLASSROOMS?

In foreign language teaching different methods and approaches appeared and disappeared
from old times till now. Especially last years the development of Communicative Language
Teaching brought with it a methodology which emphasized communication-interaction, group
works and student involvement in the teaching-learning process. Many training courses and
scholars appreciate CLT and as a consequence of this was the belief that the teacher’s
presence in the classroom should be reduced. Reducing teacher talk time (TTT) and
increasing student talk time (STT) is considered to be an important aspect of creating a
communicative classroom. So this study is aimed to provide some techniques for decreasing
TTT and as well as to figure out why it should be decreased in language teaching.
It was proved that large amount of TTT results very monotonous and boring environment
which can de-motivate students and occur negative beliefs toward a foreign language. If the
teacher is constantly and frequently dominant and ‘a boss’, the learners take no responsibility
for their own learning but learn what the teacher decides and wants. This limits student
autonomy. TTT often means that the teacher is giving the students information about different
aspects of teaching process without letting them to react or say something, and unfortunately
there may be no indication of whether the students have understood or not.
Actually, there are plenty of strategies, activities and ways that help to decrease the
amount of teacher talking time. For example, activities requiring group or peer work can be
appropriate for achieving this goal. These types of activities also help teachers to improve
their students’ social skills. As we know, generally a teacher talks while giving explanations
or instructions, but it would be better to elicit rather than to explain. If students are presented
clear, meaningful and guiding questions they will discover the rules rather than being ‘told’,
this also will lead to have more successful learning environment. Secondly, using body
language, mimics and facial expressions are also very important in order to reduce teacher
talking time. The position of the teacher in the classroom can also indicate to the students
what is expected of them at a particular stage of the lesson.
Asking questions also is very essential aspect in increasing student talking time. Instead
of asking yes/no questions, giving open ended question can be very effective strategy for
mentioned issue. Also giving ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions can prompt students to express their
opinions, feelings and attitudes. In this case participation is very important, we as teachers
should be aware of whether all students participate or not. Of course if teachers let students to
talk more and be more active they should take into consideration some points, like about
treating mistakes done by students. In this case teachers should be positive about mistakes, in
other words it should be provided a welcoming class environment where students feel they are
able to make mistakes; it also helps to increase student confidence whenever possible.
Another strategy for decreasing teacher talking time and increasing student talking time
is tolerating silence. Inexperienced teachers or fresh teachers in particular tend to fill silences

by unnecessary talking. Silence is important not only when students are working individually,
but also provides ‘processing time’ between instructions, during explanations, while waiting
for a student to respond, and during monitoring of activities. Prompting or providing clues
and rephrasing the question are often counter to productivity, when the student merely needs
time to answer. Teacher should really listen to what they say and let what they say really
affect what you do next, or in other words work on listening to the person, and the meaning,
as well as to the language and the mistakes. In short terms teachers should be interested in, not
interesting.
No doubt the most teachers understand that students should have as much opportunity to
speak as possible when learning English as a foreign language. “We learn by practice.
Whether it means to learn to dance by practicing dancing or to learn to live by practicing
living, the principles are the same.” According to this statement of Martha Graham, if you
want to become a good dancer, you don’t just watch or read about dancing, you should
practice things the dancers do. The same is true for becoming an English speaker – the
students need to speak English in order to learn English.
İNGİLİS DİLİNDƏ FRAZEOLOJİ BİRLƏŞMƏLƏRİN
ANALOJİ YOLLA AZƏRBAYCAN DİLİNDƏ İFADƏSİ

Beynəlxalq aləmdə ingilis dilinin əhəmiyyətinin getdikcə artması ilə əlaqədar olaraq
təkcə leksik vahidlər yox, frazeoloji birləşmələr də külli miqdarda bu dildən başqa dillərə, o
cümlədən Azərbaycan dilinə keçir. İngilis dili frazeologiyasının Azərbaycanda öyrənilməsi
yeni bir məsələ deyil. Azərbaycan dili tarixində bu proses hələ sovet dövründə və rus dilinin
frazeoloji vahidlərin də əmələgəlmə mənbəyidir. Frazeoloji vahidlər, hər şeydən əvvəl, söz
birləşmələri olub, kommunikativ məqsədlərə xidmət edir.
Hal-hazırda Azərbaycanın beynəlxalq aləmə inteqrasiyası ilə əlaqədar olaraq onun ingilis
dili ilə bilavasitə təmasları gündən-günə genişlənir. Amma bu heç də o demək deyildir ki, in-
gilis dilinə məxsus olan söz və frazeoloji birləşmələrin alınmasında rus dilinin vasitəçiliyi ta-
mamilə aradan çıxmışdır. Həmin linqvistik prosesdə rus dilinin vasitəçiliyi yeni tarixi şəraitdə
də qalır və məhz hansı söz və söz birləşmələrinin seçilib-götürülməsində həlledici rol oynayır.
Ancaq ingilis və Azərbaycan dili frazeoloji vahidləri arasında analoqların olmasının
səbəbi təkcə həmin frazeologizmlərin ingilis dilindən alınması deyil. Bu cür analoqların bir
qismi onların məhz hansı isə xarici mənbə ilə bağlı olmasını nəzərdə tutur. Onların bir qismi
müxtəlif xalqların həyat və məişətində, psixologiyasında, adət və ənənələrində olan oxşar
cəhətlərlə bağlıdır. Əlbəttə, bu qəbildən olan oxşarlıqların müəyyən hissəsi məhz beynəlmiləl
linqvistik mübadilə ilə bağlıdır.
N.A.Demçukun qeyd etdiyi kimi, “hal-hazırda tədqiqatçılar arasında qohum olmayan
dillərin frazeologiyasının müqayisəli şəkildə öyrənilməsi böyük maraq doğurur. Bu həm nəzə-
