ABDUSALOMOVA DAMIRA ABDUFATOYEVNA курсовая (2) (1)

The methodological basis of the research comprises the works in comparative linguistics. There should be mentioned the works of such scientists as Crystal D., Davidson D., Golikova J.А., Ginzburg R.S., Jackson H., Jennifer S., Palmer F.R., Partridge E., Stockwell R., Viney P., Antrushina G.B., Arnold I.V.,
Ashurova D.U. and others.
The aim and objectives of the Course Paper is to offer an account of Latin influence upon the vocabulary of the English language. Latin is the most prolific source of borrowings in English, there are over 40,000 words in English of Latin origin that have entered the language throughout the different periods of its history. This goal defines the objectives of the study and the main of which are the followings:

  1. In fact, this influence of the Latin language on English did start even before English came to be an independent language, as there were already Latin loanwords in the Proto-Germanic vocabulary.

  2. An overview of the influence of Latin in the different historical periods of English will be presented, but special attention will be paid to the Modern English.

  3. Modern English period is specially relevant due to the significance of Latin borrowings in a period of massive lexical expansion taking place in the Renaissance, which is closely linked with the elaboration of functions of English as a part of its standardization process.

The objects of investigation is Latin influence on English vocabulary.
The subject of investigation is Latin borrowings in English.
The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that:

    1. A great deal of the foreign elements in the English lexicon are of Latin or French origin, but several other languages have influenced English as well, e.g. Scandinavian.

    2. English has borrowed words from several languages over the course of its history.

    3. The Renaissance was a period when classical languages i.e. Latin and Greek, were rediscovered. These two languages were regarded to be superior to English.
