The world has been turning and changing considerably since the last quarter of the 
twentieth  century.  The  purpose  of  this  study  is  to  analyze,  understand  and  discuss  the 
traces  of  social  change  and  intellectual  conflict  between  modernity  emerging  in  this 
process and postmodernity at the centre of Zygmunt Bauman’s ideas
. 
In  the  first  chapter  of  the  study,  the  concept  of  ‘modern’  and  its  extensions  are 
discussed.  This  chapter  intends  to  show  the  social  and  individual
 
results  of  modernity 
project which is a product of Enlightenment based on reason and science orginally.
 
The 
second  chapter  of  the  thesis  concentrates  on  the  concept  of  ‘postmodern’.  Postmodern 
thought  claims  that  modernity  and  enlightenment  have  had  negative  results  about 
explaining  the  world  and  designing  the  society  during  the  last  three  centuries.  In  this 
study, The objections of postmodernity to modern world and arguments differing from 
modernity are discussed.  In the third and last chapter, modernity and postmodernity are 
examined  within  the  frame  of  today’s  attention-grabbing  thinker/sociologist  Zygmunt 
Bauman’s works.
 
In  postmodern  times,    the  habits  and  relationships  of  human,  society  and 
individual have been changed. Grieves from modernity as well as postmodernity staying 
in  limbo  make  feel  pessimistic  about  the  solution  of  today’s  problems.  However,  it  is 
claimed that the desire of tolerance and unity caused by postmodern thought is the need 
of  global  and  also  local  humanbeings.  In  short,  the  result  derived  from  this  study 
presents  that  the  world  is  in  need  of  a  new  understanding.      The  result  of  this  study 
briefly the world  needs  a new aproach.  This  study is  a  humble  effort in the context of 
the
 
social sciences and philosophy.

Bu  çalışma,  Atatürk  Üniversitesi  Sosyal  Bilimler  Enstitüsü  Felsefe  Anabilim 
Dalı’nda,  Doç.  Dr.  M.  Hanifi  MACİT  yönetiminde  bir  yüksek  lisans  tezi  olarak 
hazırlanmıştır. 
Çalışmamızın  konusu  yirminci  yüzyılın  son  döneminde  öne  çıkan  bir  tartışma 
olan  postmodernizm/postmodernite  ve  modernizm/modernite  kavramları  ve  bu 
kavramlara çağdaş bir düşünür-sosyolog olan Zygmunt Bauman’ın penceresinden bakışı 
oluşturmaktadır. Postmodernite, modernitenin bittiğini ilan ederek entelektüel dünyada 
yeni  bir  sayfa  açtığını  ileri  sürmüş,  buna  karşın  modernite  düşüncesi,  aydınlanma 
projesinin  hala  devam  ettiğini  ve  postmodern  itirazların  yerinde  olsa  bile  alternatif 
oluşturmadığını  veya  insanlığa  sunduğu  herhangi  bir  değer-gelecek  olmadığı  için 
eleştirmiştir.  Bauman  modernite  deneyiminin  korkunç  evresi  olan  2.dünya  savaşını 
yaşamış,  mağdur  olmuş  bir  düşünür  olarak  modernitenin  eksikliklerini  görmüş,  buna 
karşın  postmodernitenin  boşluğunda  asılı  kalmayıp,  dönemleri  iyi  analiz  edip  akışkan 
dünyayı yaşanır kılacak olanın özellikle hoşgörü ve dayanışma olduğunu belirtmiştir. 
Çalışmama çok değerli eleştiri ve katkılarını samimiyetle sunan; her zaman sabırlı 
ve  olumlu  yaklaşıp  entelektüel  teşvikte  bulunan  danışman  hocam  sayın  Doc.Dr.  M.
