POSTMODERN KÜLTÜRDE KİMLİK: BİR ELEŞTİRİ
Cenan KUVANCI
IDENTITY IN POSTMODERN CULTURE: A CRITIQUE
ABSTRACT
As a philosophical movement, postmodernism can be described as a form of
scepticism about authority, generally accepted wisdom, cultural and political norms, etc. The
technical term can be used to describe such a style of philosophy is “anti-foundational”. In
posmodern World indeterminacy and softness are dominant. In this world, every thing may
happen and everything can be done, but nothing can be done once for all. Whatever happens
comes unannounced and goes away without notice. In this context, bonds are dissembled into
successive encounters, identities into successively worn masks, life-story into a series of
episodes whose sole lasting importance is their equally ephemeric memory. Betting is now
the rule where certainty was once sought, while taking risks replaces the stubborn pursuit of
goals. In such World identities are thought just as a change of costume can be adopted and
discarded in a short-time. The horror of the new situation is that all diligent efforts of building
identity may prove to be in vain; the allurement of the new situation, on the other hand, lies
in the fact of not being bound by past trials, of never being irrevocably defeated, always
keeping the options open.
