LESSON 4
[see: §§23, 24, 32, 33 of Grammar reference for details]
My Working Day
I am not an early riser and it is very difficult for me to get out
of bed, especially in winter. So the alarm-clock in my room
wakes me up at 7 o'clock on weekdays and my working day
begins. I switch on my tape-recorder and do my morning
exercises. Then I go into the
bathroom, take a warm shower,
and shave. I return to my
bedroom and get dressed.
My mother usually makes
breakfast for me. But when she
is away on business or just
doesn't have to get up early*, I
make breakfast myself. I switch
off my tape-recorder and turn on
the radio to listen to the latest
news while having breakfast.
I leave home at 7:30 as a rule, but sometimes I have to leave at
a quarter to eight. I often walk to the nearest underground station.
It takes me half an hour to get to work by metro. But I don't want
to waste my time on the train. I have got a small cassette-player
and I listen to different English texts and dialogues. Sometimes I
read a book and retell it silently. If I come across an interesting
expression I try to memorize it*. I also write some of the new
words in my note-book and learn them.
I am not a professional employee. I finished school two years
54
ago and wanted to enter Baku State University, but unfortunately
I couldn't pass through testing. The first thing I thought two years
ago, when I became aware of my failure to enter the University,
to work somewhere. It was not easy to find a job, but I managed
to get a position of a secretary in a small business company.
Company management agreed to take me because I had learned
to work on a computer and business organization at school. And
besides, I passed my English school-leaving exam with an
excellent mark and I am able to express my thought in English
and understand English speaking people.
I usually arrive at work at five minutes to nine though my
working day begins at 9 sharp. There are always some fax
messages on my table. I have to translate them from English into
Azeri. Sometimes my boss wants me to write a letter to our
business partners abroad. There are also a lot of phone calls
which I am to answer*.
At 1 o'clock in the afternoon we have lunch. We usually have
lunch in a small cafe just round the corner. At 2 o'clock we come
back to work. And we work till five o'clock. During the working
day we also have some short coffee breaks. But sometimes we
have no time for them.
I come home at 7 o'clock in the evening. My parents are
usually at home. We have dinner together. Then we sit in the
living room, drink tea, watch TV or just talk. Occasionally I have
to stay at work till 6 or even 7 o'clock in the evening. When we
have a lot of things to do we go to work on Saturdays too. But
generally we work five days a week. We work on Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. So by the end of the
week I get very tired. All I can do on Sundays is to sleep till
eleven o'clock, watch television, listen to music or read
something in English. And of course, I always look forward to my
next working day* because I like my job. That is all I can tell you
about my working day.
