Suggestions for Further Reading
The field of German history is controversial and constantly developing. The
titles listed below represent a highly selective sample of some older and a few
more recent English-language works. The bibliography is roughly divided
according to major historical periods, but many works straddle chronological
boundaries and some periods and topics are better covered than others. Works on
the modern period, and in particular on Nazism and the Holocaust, have –
typically – burst the bounds of proportion in both publishing history and public
interest. A few general guides to a period or contributing to debates on a
particular issue are included below; readers interested in exploring certain
periods and problems in more depth, or pursuing references in less well-trodden
fields, may find these works helpful for initial orientation.
