Rural
Friday
Mosques

the
Context of Cultural Heritage and Faith Tourism: Sinop
Case
Abstract
The Sinop province is based on a mountainous geography. The rural settlements in this moun-
tainous area are mostly scattered and separated from each other. There were periodic meetings
that provide socioeconomic integration of rural settlements which had difficult access over a
mountainous geographical region. Maybe the most important of these was Friday which holy day
of Islam, broght together Muslim men for worship. This social function of Friday was much more
important when transport and communication facilities were very limited, especially in rural ar-
eas. Until recently, there were no mosques in every village and neighborhood in the rural areas
where the rural settlements were scattered in mountainous geographies like Sinop. Therefore, in
some cases the public has gone to a central village to Friday prays. In some cases, a common
mosque was built a central rural area between villages. That kind of rural mosques called “Friday
Mosques” and it was used in only Friday prays. Friday mosques were established in rural areas,
especially in mountainous areas, when there were no mosques in each village. They brought to-
gether the scattered people one day a week to provide social gathering and communication. These
common mosques would appeal to settled villagers, shepherds and summer nomads. These com-
mon mosques sometimes set up in large villages, sometimes outside the settlements, around the
roads, in the forests, near the streams. There are many Cuma mosques in Sinop province. But
most of them are abandoned and forgotten for various reasons. One of the reasons of them is the
facilitation of access to the mosques because of the development of transportation facilities. An-
other reason is the abandonment of some villages. And the third one is the construction of modern
mosques in every village. These mosques, made of mostly wood, were important landmarks of
the rural local architecture. Their destruction means the loss of important architectural heritages
of Turkish-Islamic culture in Sinop countryside. One of these is Derecuma Mosque. This mosque
has been restored during Roadwork and used again. However, many mosques in Sinop province
are being demolishing or using without restoration. Friday mosques should be preserved and kept
alive as cultural heritage. It should also be considered as tourist attractions that will help economic
and sociocultural development of Sinop countryside. In this paper, information about the some
Friday Mosques in Sinop will be given, related protection strategies and faith tourism-based des-
tination development will be tried to be discussed.
