Distinguished women!
Dear mothers and sisters!
I congratulate you on the International Women`s Day.
The 8
th
 of March is celebrated as a holiday of love and respect to women all over 
the world. The cultural development of the mankind is closely tied with the attitude 
towards women and mothers. Women have always contributed to the solution of global 
problems and still play an important role in the development of the modern world. 
The Azerbaijani women have played an important role in our history for centuries. 
Our history knows a lot of prominent women, including wise stateswomen, brave 
military commanders, talented poetesses and fi gures of culture. Respect to women, 
motherly love have been refl ected in our literature and art. Our masters of literature 
and art praised the morals, bravery and loyalty of the Azerbaijani women in their 
works. Calling our language mother tongue, our country motherland demonstrates the 
high respect to mothers in our country. 
The Azerbaijani women, who have passed the historical diffi culties successfully, are 
taking an active part in the ongoing processes in our country now. They do their best for 
strengthening our independence, protection of our territorial integrity, establishment 
of a legal and democratic state, development of Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani women 
carry out their duties to raise our youth as loyal citizens for the country during such a 
hard period when a part of our territories are under the occupation of Armenia. I am 
sure that the Azerbaijani women, who understand their responsibility in our society 
will contribute to the progress in our country further.

The Azerbaijani women have played an important role in our history for centuries.

masters of literature and art praised the morals, bravery and loyalty of the Azerbaijani 
women in their works.
The Azerbaijani women, who have passed the historical diffi culties successfully, 
play an important role in our democratic society now. They do their best for 
strengthening our country. The Azerbaijani women serving our state in different 
spheres are active participants of social processes. They do their best for maintaining 
peace and stability in our country, strengthening civil solidarity and statehood, 
keeping the national values alive, developing our culture.
The Azerbaijani women carry out their duties to raise our youth as loyal citizens 
for our country during such a hard period when part of our territories are under 
occupation.

ILHAM ALIYEV RECEIVING THE PARTICIPANTS OF THE 
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE HELD IN BAKU ON THE THEME 
OF THE «ROLE OF WOMEN IN NEW CONDITIONS OF SECURITY: 
STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE OF THE GENDER FACTOR» 
HELD IN BAKU 
Presidential Palace, September 27, 2005
I welcome you in Azerbaijan. I am happy that such an important international 
conference is being held in our country. It is of great importance. Because it discussed 
very Important issues within the frames of the conference. Confl icts are still existing 
in the Southern Caucasus. The role of women are signifi cant in establishing peace and 
stability. Azerbaijan is a newly independent country. It has suffered from problems, 
the confl ict, and the civil war. Our territories are still under occupation. Over one 
million Azerbaijanis have become displaced persons as a result of the Armenian 
aggression. Of course, it is a disaster for our nation. 
Women play an important role in the education of children and the welfare of the 
family. It means that they have suffered from family problems, as well. I am aware 
that you will discuss these problems and meet the refugees. It is one of our greatest 
problems. Unfortunately, no peace has been established in the Caucasus yet. 
Women`s role in international relations are very important. We pay much attention 
to the gender issues. Women are very active. It demonstrates the democratization 
of our country. I think that this conference is a good opportunity to discuss some 
issues, get acquianted with Azerbaijan, and establish better relations. 
I know that most of you are in Azerbaijan for the fi rst time. It is a very good 
opportunity for you to see Azerbaijan, know its problems and successes. 
Despite the confl ict, the economic and social development of our country is 
very positive. A high economic growth is being observed in Azerbaijan. According 
to the information of the International Monetary Fund, Azerbaijan will have the 
highest economic growth in the world in 2005. This achievement is the result of our 
economic reforms and transnational projects. The investments helped our country
