TUKAN 8k

Tukan-8k Analyzer
The multi-channel pulse height analyzer (MCA) and multi-channel scaler (MCS)
is a device for running spectroscopy or timing measurements performed in
nuclear laboratories and institutions for radioactive contamination control.
The TUKAN8k analyzer consists of two parts: analyzer hardware and the
software.
The program can control up to 4 analyzers at a time (see.
 "
Instalation of
Tukan8k program" p. 5).

Analyzer hardware is available in two versions:
- the
Tukan-8k-PCI
card to be plugged into the IBM PC in the PCI slot
- the
Tukan-8k-USB
box to be connected to the IBM PC via USB interface
Operating mode:
A spectrum or timing information is collected in the device buffer and can be
displayed and analyzed on a computer screen. The acquired data flow from the
hardware to the program is performed through the driver installed in computer's
memory (WinDriver from "Jungo Software Technologies" for Tukan_8k_PCI card
or FTD2XX from "Future Technology Devices International Ltd" for
Tukan_8k_USB box).
The TUKAN8k software ensures possibility to visualize acquisition straight on a
monitor and to perform "quick" analysis during an acquisition. A collected
spectrum can also be saved in computer's memory or to a file and may be
analyzed any time later. It means that the analyzer allows to work with an
archived spectra loaded from the disk files.
Supports:
Windows 2000 / XP / Vista - „plug and play" device
The program itself can operate with various types of analyzer, including PCI or
even old ISA version of the Tukan.
It is also possible to select "undefined" device type what in practice denotes
program execution without the analyzer hardware. Then program works in the
"off-line" mode but it requires
USB Protection Key
 connected to the computer.
In the other hands: program Tukan8k from version 1.70 works on computer with
analyzer or with USB  protection key.
This manual describes program architecture, rules of its operation and
methodology of performing particular operations.
Detailed description of the analyzer hardware, its modes and technical
parameters may be found in "Hardware Technical ReferenceTukan-8k…"
available on the installation disk.

Tukan-8k Analyzer
1.1
Installation
The installation process consists of two steps:  installation of the program and
installation of the analyzer device or USB Key.
Administrative privileges of the user performing installation are cruelly
required
Hardware requirements
Instalation of Tukan8k program
Installation for Tukan_8k_PCI card
Installation for Tukan_8k_USB box
Installation for USB Protection Key
After successful installation of the program and the device drivers, when the
program is started for the first time, it is necessary to select a type of analyzer
to operate with.
The first start of the program
Hardware requirements
1.1.1
Minimal hardware requirements:
PC compatible computer with 500 MHz processor,
25 MB available disk space, CD-ROM,
graphic device and monitor allowing 800x600 display resolution.
Optimal hardware requirements:
PC compatible computer with 1 GHz or better processor,
10MB available disk space, CD-ROM,
graphic device and monitor allowing 1024x768 display resolution.
Operating system:
MS Windows 2000 with Servis Pack 4 or MS Windows XP
with Servis Pack 2 (or higher) or MS Windows Vista Business.
Instalation of Tukan8k program
1.1.2
To begin an installation simple place the ‘Tukan8k Installation Disk’ into CD drive
and run ‘Setup.exe’.
Attention!
 – if a type of analyzer planed to manage is Tukan-8k-PCI, then it is
recommended to plug the device into PCI slot before starting the
installation procedure.
In case of other analyzer types it is not necessary to attach them
before starting program installation.

TUKAN 8k
1.
When an installation begins, install welcome form appears on a screen.
Pressing ‘Next’ this time and later during the whole installation process it is
possible to flow between different dialog forms which all together allow the user
to configure the program to his needs, first of all to the type of applied analyzer
type.
2.
The first dialog form, which is ‘Customer Information’ contains name of currently
logged user.
There are to options to select between:
·
‘Anyone who uses this computer (all users)’ – selecting this means, that
data saved by the program (spectra, calibrations, etc.) will be placed in ‘
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Tukan8k’ folder which is accessible to all
users of the PC
·
‘Only for me’ - data saved by the program will be accessible only by that user
which is currently logged in and who runs the installation.

3.
In ‘Setup Type’ form the user should select version of the program which will be
adequate for the analyzer type he applies:
·
‘Typical’  - the program will control only one type of analyzer, that one which
will be selected in a next dialog form,
·
Complete’ – full version of the program will be installed. It means that all
devices belonging to the Tukan analyzers stock will be supported by the
program
4.
In ‘Type of analyzer’ form the user should select one type of analyzer which will
be supported by the program (note, that it is displayed only then, when in
previous dialog ‘Typical’ option was selected)
5.
In a next dialog form it should be decided if the program supports control of one
analyzer at a time only or several analyzers (up to 4) simultaneously. It is so,
because an analyzer is a main part of ‘Acquisition path’ and number of
acquisition paths supported determines a number of supported analyzers. In
most cases the program controls only one analyzer, so by default the first option
is selected.
6.
‘Language’ dialog form allows selecting language in which the program
interfaces with the user.
To gain possibility of interfacing in Polish, the second option should be selected.
7.
In ‘Destination Folder’ form the user can define the main folder placement, i.e.
