zıntı sahəsinin şərqində e.ə. IV-III əsrlərə aid alt
təbəqədə son illərdə aparılan qazıntılar zamanı
3-cü oval planlı tikintinin şərq hissəsi aşkar olun-
muşdur (şək.2) .
Bu oval tikinti 2-ci oval tikintinin cənub
tərəfində, onunla paralel olaraq şərq-qərb
istiqamətində uzanır. Ölçüləri də təxminən 2-ci
oval planlı tikinti ilə, demək olar ki, bərabərdir
(şək.11; 2-ci və 3-cü oval planlı tikintilərin pla-
nı). Lakin 3-cü oval planlı tikinti stratiqrafik
cəhətdən ikincidən daha qədim dövrə aiddir. Həm
mədəni təbəqənin stratiqrafiyasına, həm də onun
In 2013, the proceedings of the search work for the
cemetery of ancient Gabala were conserved.
The excavations of the ground cultural stratum
were continued in excavation area III. Just as every
other year, during the previous year grass also grew
in the excavation area and the excavation work start-
ed after the grass was burned. (Fig.1) The main ex-
cavation works were continued in excavation area
III in the ancient city area. The eastern area of oval-
planned building III was detected here, in the lower
stratum belonging to the 4th-3rd centuries BC, in
the east of the excavation area during the excavation
works in previous years (Fig.2).
This oval-planned building extends to the south
side of oval building II, in an east-west direction and
is parallel with it. The dimensions are approximately
equal to those of oval-planned building II (Fig.11,
the plan of the 2nd and 3rd oval-planned buildings).
But stratigraphically, oval-planned building III be-
longs to a more ancient period than oval-planned
building II. Due to the stratigraphy of the cultural
layer and to the finds over its floor, this oval building
can be attributed to the 3rd century BC.

River-stone built one-meter-wide wall foundations
of other buildings under this building and an earlier cul-
tural stratum are being pursued. The wall foundations
pursued under oval building III pass under the walls of
oval buildings in a northern direction and this indicates
these walls predate both sets of oval buildings.
Oval building III and the river-stone built walls pre-
dating oval building III suffered great destruction during
the digging of wells belonging to a subsequent period.
These wells are oval-planned (Fig.3a, 3b). However, it
is possible to follow the general plan of the oval build-
ing.
In the report year, research continued of the ware-
house belonging to the 4th-3rd centuries BC which was
detected in the lower layer during the archaeological
excavations carried out in previous years. Only part
of this warehouse’s remains was detected in previous

belə küplərin qalıqları aşkar edilmişdir. Qazıntının
stratiqrafiyası tapıntıların müqayisəli analizi və ra-
dio-karbon (C

) üsulu ilə müəyyən olunmuşdur
ki, bu anbar e.ə. IV-III əsrlərə aiddir. Uzun müddət
istifadə nəticəsində küplərin böyük əksəriyyəti sın-
mış və onlar artıq e.ə. III əsrin ortalarında istifadə
üçün yararsız hala düşmüşdür. Sonralar, onlar-
da uzun müddət istifadə nəticəsində çatlar əmələ
gəldiyindən bəzilərində çaxır saxlamaq mümkün
olmamış və belə küplərdə qoz, fındıq və digər ərzaq
məhsulları saxlanmışdır. E.ə. III əsrin ortalarında
anbar əhəmiyyətini tamamilə itirmiş, o zaman hələ
bəzi məhsullar saxlamaq üçün yararlı olan küplər
götürülmüş, tamam yararsız olan küplərin qalıqları
yerində saxlanaraq sahə hamarlanmış və orada yeni
binalar tikilmişdir.
Hələ e.ə. IV əsrdə Qəbələdə bu böyüklükdə çaxır
anbarının olması çox böyük maraq doğururdu. İndiyə
kimi bütün Qafqazda Antik dövrə aid bu böyüklükdə
çaxır anbarı aşkar edilməmişdir. Ona görə də anbarın
bütün sahəsini təmizləmək və onun ümumi ölçülərini
müəyyən etmək zəruri idi.
olunur. Belə laylara ayrılan daşlara şəhər yerinin
yaxınlığında yerləşən çaylarda rast gəlinmir. Onlar
qədim şəhər yerindən 25-30 km şimalda, indiki ra-
yon mərkəzinin yaxınlığında (şimali-qərbində) çay-
ların sahilindəki qayalardan gətirilmişdir.
years. The remains of great household pitchers which
were dug into the ground up to their shoulders in rows
are under investigation in this warehouse (Fig.4a, 4b, 6).
The remains of approximately 200 such pitchers have
been found up to this year. Through the stratigraphy of
the excavations, a comparative analysis of the finds and
radio-carbon dating, it was ascertained that this ware-
house belongs to the 4th-3rd centuries. The great major-
ity of the pitchers got broken through prolonged usage
and they became unfit for use in the middle of the 3rd
century BC. It became impossible to keep wine in some
of the pitchers due to cracks appearing in them, but
then walnuts, hazelnuts and other food products were
stored in these pitchers instead. The warehouse lost its
importance completely in the middle of the 3rd century
BC, the pitchers which could still be used to store some
products were removed, the remains of the absolutely
useless pitchers were kept in situ, the area was smoothed
over and new buildings were erected there.
The existence of a wine cellar of this magnitude in
Gabala in the 4th century BC aroused great interest. A
wine cellar of this magnitude belonging to the Ancient
Period had not been detected in the whole Caucasus be-
fore now. Therefore, it was necessary to clean the whole
area of the warehouse and to determine its general di-
mensions. But after the warehouse was dealt with, it was
necessary to preserve some remains of oval building II
in the same area at this time. The excavation area were
extended more than 100 square meters in this direction
because the remains of the building continued towards
the north wall of oval-planned building II. As a result,
it was known that in this warehouse household pitch-
ers were put in 11 rows with no less than 20 pitchers in
every row. There were no less than 220 wine pitchers in
the warehouse in total. Thousands of litres of wine and
other food products were stored in these pitchers.
Although the warehouse’s capture area was excavat-
ed almost completely, the remains of its walls were not
detected. During the excavations, parts of the flat stone
lids which were used for closing the lips of the pitch-
ers and fragments of clay jugs which were used to pour
the wine from the pitchers were found on the floor of
the warehouse. The stones belonging to such strata are
