116 2011-2012 Qəbələ arxeoloji ekspedisiyasının hesabatları reports oF the gabala archaeologıcal expedıtıon çöl-tədqiqat işlərinin plani 2012-ci ildə Antik şəhər yerində əsas qazın- tı işlərinin III və IV qazıntı sahələrində aparılması nəzərdə tutulmuşdu. Belə ki, əvvəlki illərdə III qa- zıntı sahəsində alt təbəqədə aşkar edilən e.ə. IV-III əsrlərə aid böyük çaxır anbarının qalıqlarının yalnız bir hissəsi təmizlənmişdir. Bu anbarın bütünlüklə qalıqlarını aşkar etmək üçün qazıntı sahəsini xey- li genişləndirmək lazım idi. İndiyə kimi təkcə Azərbaycanda deyil, bütün Qafqazda Antik dövrə aid bu böyüklükdə çaxır anbarı məlum deyildi. Bundan başqa, bu qazıntı sahəsində 3-cü oval planlı tikintinin də yalnız bir hisəsinin qalıqları öyrənilmişdi. Bu oval planlı tikinti həmin sahədə aşkar edilən 1 və 2-ci belə tikintilərdən daha qədim dövrə - Erkən Ellinizm dövrünə aiddir. 2012-ci ildə bu tikintinin də bütün qalıqlarının üzə çıxarılması nəzərdə tutulmuşdu. 2011-ci ildə bu sahədə ən üst təbəqədə aşkar edilən 1-ci oval tikintinin altında mədəni təbəqənin stratiqrafiyasını müəyyən etmək üçün kiçik bir sahədə qazıntı aparılan zaman orada eramızdan əvvəl təxminən III-II əsrlərə aid gil qab bişirmə kürələrinin qalıqları üzə çıxarılmışdır. Məlum ol- muşdu ki, burada geniş sahədə gil qab bişirmə ema- latxanasının qalıqları yerləşir. Qəbələdə indiyə kimi həmin dövrə aid gil qab bişirmə emalatxanası aşkar olunmadığı üçün bu qalıqları öyrənmək zəruridir. Bu məqsədlə həmin sahədə 1-ci oval tikintinin qalıqla- rını saxlamaqla imkan daxilində qazıntını bir qədər genişləndirmək nəzərdə tutulmuşdur. Bütün bu işlərlə yanaşı, ətraf ərazidə də şəhərin qədim qəbiristanlığının yerini müəyyənləşdirmək üçün imkan daxilində kəşfiyyat işlərinin aparılması nəzərdə tutulmuşdu.
The progress of the excavation work was taken into account in the ancient city area in 2012. During the excavation work, excavation areas III and IV of the ancient city area were given special considera- tion. Thus, only part of the remains of the wine cellar be- longing to the 4th-3rd centuries BC detected in the lower stratum of excavation area III had been cleaned previously. In order to detect the whole remains of this wine cellar it was necessary to enlarge the excavation area much more. A wine cellar of this magnitude belonging to the Ancient Period was unknown not only in Azerbaijan, but also in the whole Caucasus heretofore. Besides this, only part of the remains of oval-planned building III in this area had also been explored previously. This oval-planned building belongs to the Early Hellen- istic Period - a more ancient period than that to which buildings I and II, which were detected in the same area, belong. The detection of all the remains of this building was also taken into account in 2012. Remains of clay dish-making kilns belonging approxi- mately to the 3rd-2nd centuries BC were detected there while excavation work was under way to determine the stratigraphy of the cultural stratum under oval building I which was detected in the top layer of this area in 2011. It was known that remains of a clay dish-making workshop are located in a large area here. It is necessary to explore these remains because no clay dish-making work- shop belonging to the same period in Gabala has been de- tected before now. To this end, the excavation area was enlarged somewhat as far as possible while preserving the remains of oval building I in the same area. In addition to this work, exploratory work in the sur- rounding area was considered in order to detect the lo- cation of the ancient city cemetery. According to local residents, some years ago clay dishes were found in the north-eastern part of the ancient city area while the ground was being ploughed. We did not see those dishes, but ac- cording to the information obtained, the dishes should be belong to the Ancient Period. Such dishes were usually put into graves. Hər yeni qazıntı mövsümünün əvvəlində qazıntısı yarımçıq qalmış bu tikintilərin üstü təmizlənərək qazıntı davam etdirilir. 2012 - ci ildə də qazıntı işinə başlayarkən bu örtükləri götürüb, sahəni təmizləyərək qazıntını davam et- dirmişik. Bununla yanaşı, şəhər yerinin şimal-şərqində yerli sakinlərin məlumatına əsasən, əvvəlki illərdə yer şumlanarkən gil qablara rast gəlinən sahədə qədim qəbirlərin izini axtarmaq məqsədi ilə iki yerdə yoxlama şurfları qoyuldu. Bu şurflar bir-birindən xeyli aralı qəbirlərin olması güman edilən yerlərdə hərəsi 6m uzunluğunda qoyul- muşdur. Lakin şurflar qoyulan yerlərdə qəbirlər aşkar edilmədi. Hələ keçən əsrin 70-ci illərində şəhər yerinin cənubi-şərqindən bir neçə yüz metr məsafədə kiçik bir sahədə antik dövrə aid bir neçə torpaq qəbri aşkar edilmişdir. Lakin həmin qəbirlərə yaxın məsafələrdə kəşfiyyat qazıntıları zamanı başqa qəbirlər tapılmamışdır. III qazıntı sahəsində ən alt mədəni təbəqənin qazıntıları davam etdirilmişdir. Hər il olduğu kimi, keçən il ərzində qazıntı sahəsində ot bitmiş- di (şək.1). Onu təmizlədikdən sonra qazıntılara başlanıldı. Antik şəhər yerində əsas qazıntı işləri III qa- zıntı sahəsində davam etdirilmişdir. Burada qa- excavation proGress Last year the surface of the detected building re- mains were covered with cellophane and with soil during excavation work in order to protect these remains in the ancient city area temporarily. Exca- vation work proceeds after the cleaning of the sur- face of these incomplete buildings at the beginning of every new excavation season. At the start of the excavation work in 2012, we also continued to clean the area after removal of these covers. Besides this, following the information from local residents, con- trol shafts were dug in both areas to search for traces of the ancient graves from which the clay dishes de- tected during ploughing of the ground in the north- eastern part of the city area the previous year may have come. Shafts 6 meters long were dug down much farther apart in the areas where the graves were expected to be found. But no graves were de- tected in the areas where the shafts were dug. In the 1970s, some soil graves belonging to the Ancient Period were detected a few hundred meters from the south-eastern area of the city. But no other graves were detected near those graves during the exploratory excavations. These excavations indi- cated that the search for the main cemetery of the ancient city should be carried out in other areas. During exploratory excavations of previous years, some graves were detected in one place on a height located in the east and north-eastern area of the city but it was determined that the graves were not spread over a large area. Thus, the location of the main cemetery of the big city which stood here for over 400 years is still not determined. The detected graves seemed to be the graves of a group and to belong to one family. Therefore, in order to learn the history of the city, it is necessary to undertake exca- vation work not only in the city area, but also in the location of its cemetery. The main cemetery of the city could not be located in the area where we dug the shafts this year. There could have been individ- ual graves but they were not encountered.
