From Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey  
Passing Process the Yusuflu Village (Türkeli – Sinop) 
 
 
Absract 
Instead collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey regarding the establishment 
of the new, that it be understood that two separate states, state or is a continuation of each other 
is an important topic of discussion among social scientists.Kuruoğlu Hüseyin, who has been a 
mukhtar for 18 years between the years 1918-1936 in Yusuflu village of Türkeli County of Sinop, 
is an important source for us to clarify these discussions.Among these documents are the release 
taxes, the petitions to the upper authorities of the villagers, the services provided, the health, title 
deeds and  military documents, compulsory  donation receipts etc.  has an important place.
In the 
study, the correspondence of the village headman Yusuflu Village, which has been transferred to 
the  present  day  by  his  heirs,  was  evaluated,  and  the  relations  between  the  last  period  and  state 
relations of the Ottoman Empire and the relations of the first years of the Republic where there is 
no interruption in the way, except the change of the name of the state in the administrative sense 
has not been seen any other change. 
Thanks to these documents; 
-In the correspondence transition to Latin alphabet instead of Arabic alphabet, 
-How and in what conditions the right of the petition is used by the citizens,
 
-When  the  force  of  the  Imperial  Revolution  forced  the  petitioners  to  write  "ilçebay"  instead  of 
"kaymakamlık/district governorship". 
-Land registry records are kept regularly, it can be clearly seen that relations with the state such 
as military, security and health services are maintained very smoothly. 
As  a result,  Yusuflu  Village  mukhtarship  documents  are  uncommon  rare  documents  reflecting 
the social life in Anatolia during the transition period of the Ottoman Empire and the administra-
tive change taking place during this period. This important inheritance was assessed by us, and 
the process of living in Sinop during those years was analyzed through these documents and tried 
to be clarified at that time.

Öz 
Sinop İli, Erfelek İlçesi, Karacaköy’de bulunan köy camisi aslında bir Rum Ortodoks kilisesinin 
onarılarak  camiye  çevrilmiş  hali,  yani  devşirme  bir  İslami  yapıdır.  20.  yy.’ın  başında  bölgede 
yaşanan mübadele öncesi bir Rum köyü olan Karacaköy daha sonra yöreye Türk-İslam nüfusunun 
yerleşmesi ile Müslümanlaşmıştır. Türkiye genelindeki birçok örneğine benzer olarak 20. yy.’da 
20  yıl  boyu  cami  olarak  kullanılan  bu  kilise  daha  sonra  yıkılıp,  okul  haline  dönüştürülmüştür. 
Erfelek İlçe Merkezi’ne 2 km uzaklıkta Kaldırayak Kuz Mahallesi’nde bulunan Rum Ortodoks 
kilise kalıntısı ve Himmetoğlu Köyü’ndeki 19. yy.’a ait kalıntılar Karacaköy Cami’ne benzemek-
tedir. Ayrıca Ayancık Arkhangelos Kilisesi de bu camimize plansal anlamda benzeşir. Bu yapılar 
kültürel miras değeri taşımaları açısından önem arz etmektedir. Bu bildiride Karacaköy köy cami 
tüm bu yönleri ile sanat tarihi açısından tanıtılacaktır. Karadeniz kıyısında yer alan köye ait cami, 
tahrip olmakla birlikte yapının belgesel dökümünü desteklemek adına mevcut durumu, bölgedeki 
çağdaşı örneklerden yola çıkarak genel mimari yapısı, kültürel ve sosyal yaşamdaki yeri görsel 
veriler aracılığı ile açıklanmaya çalışılacaktır.

Sinop-Erfelek Karacaköy Mosque 
 
Abstract 
The village mosque in Karacaköy, Erfelek District of Sinop Province is actually a Greek Orthodox 
church that was restored and converted into a mosque is an Islamic structure. Karacaköy, which 
was a Greek village before the exchange in the region at the beginning of the 20th century, became 
a Muslim after the Turkish-Islamic population settled in. Similar to many examples across Turkey 
this church used as a mosque for 20 years in the 20th century was then demolished and transfor-
med into a school. The ruins of the Greek Orthodox church located in Kaldırayak Kuz neighbor-
hood, 2 km from the Erfelek District Center, and the ruins belonging 19th century in the village 
of Himmetoğlu similar to the Karacaköy Mosque. In addition, Ayancık Archangelos Church is 
similar to the plan with our mosque. These structures are important in terms of carrying the value 
of cultural heritage. In this paper, Karacaköy village mosque  will be introduced  in terms of art 
history with all these aspects. The mosque belonging to the village on the shore of the Black Sea 
is destroyed, the current status of the building to support documentary breakdown, based on the 
contemporary examples in the region its general architectural structure, the place in cultural and 
social life will be explained through visual data.
