origin of the World, 113:33 cp. Hypostasis of the Archons 89:32; 90:6). O gnosticismo
claramente faz do papel oposto e confuso um aspecto da sabedoria gnóstica.
Neste mesmo documento a serpente/mestre é chamada “a besta’ (therion, ver
114:3), nesse contexto, um título de nobreza. A revelação usa este termo para um
ser que é a personificação do mal (11.7) o qual os habitantes da terra adorarão e
que fará guerra contra os santos e os vencerá (13.7). Seu sucessor bestial receberá o
número 666 (13.18).
7 Irineu, Against Heresies 1:27:3 ( 368 em Early Church Fathers) sugere que Marcião
cria que a serpente o possuía. Marcião certamente cria na salvação que a serpente
pregou pela qual Caim, os homens de Sodoma e os egípcios foram salvos, enquanto
que Abel, Enoque, Noé, Abraão e os profetas pereceram. Irineu também relata
uma tradição a respeito de um encontro entre Policarpo e Marcião. Marcião
perguntou, “Você nos conhece?” e Policarpo respondeu, “Eu conheço você, o
primogênito de Satanás” (Against Heresies, 3:3:3. Hipólito trata longamente dos
Naasenos que adoravam a serpente. As doutrinas deles são classicamente gnósticas,

serpente universal é (...) o discurso sábio de Eva (...) esta é a marca que foi colocada
sobre Caim a qual qualquer um que o encontrasse não poderia matá-lo. Este (...) é
Caim, cujo sacrifício o deus deste mundo não aceitou. O sacrifício sangrento de
Abel, no entanto, foi aprovado; pois o rei deste mundo se alegra no sangue” (The
