1960’lar›n bafl› her ne kadar Beatles, LSD,
Vietnam ve hippiler öncesi bir dönem de olsa
“k›p›rdanmalar” çoktan bafllam›flt›. Popüler
Amerikan kültürünü yans›t›rken John Waters usulü bir
dönem elefltirisi de alabildi¤ine “ç›lg›n” ve e¤lenceli
oluyor elbette. Popüler gençlik kültürü üzerinden
dönemin açmazlar›n› yans›tan Waters, ›rkç›l›k gibi derin
bir meseleyi de malum grotesk üslubuyla gündeme
getirmeyi ihmal etmiyor. Televizyon ç›lg›nl›¤›n›n sürdü¤ü,
herkesin gün ve gecesini ekran bafl›nda geçirdi¤i
y›llardan 1963’te, Baltimore’day›z. Obez genç k›z›m›z
Tracy’nin tüm hayali bir gün kentin yerel kanal›n›n
popüler program› “The Corny Collins Show”a ç›kmak.
Kahraman›m›z›n hayali sonunda gerçeklefliyor ve
kendisini bu gençlik, dans ve müzik program›nda hârika
bir gösteri yaparken buluyor. An›nda flöhrete kavuflan
Tracy, flehrin sevgilisi olarak ö¤renci birli¤inde de iyi bir
fleyler yapmaya çal›fl›yor ama rakipleri onu hiç de rahat
b›rakaca¤a benzemiyor. Dönemin popüler dans ve
müzikleri eflli¤inde izledi¤imiz bu e¤lenceli ç›lg›nl›klar
silsilesinde, Jonh Waters’›n “diva”s› Divine da Tracy’nin
annesi rolünde. Minik bir rolle sürpriz yapan Waters’›
izlemek de cabas›. Baz›lar›na göre yönetmenin en

Although the early 60s were pre-Beatles, pre-LSD,
pre-V›etnam and pre-h›pp›es, st›rr›ngs had already
started.
And it is no surprise that while reflecting on
American culture, a John Waters-style period criticism
becomes very zany and hilarious. Reflecting on the
dilemmas of the time through popular youth culture,
Waters does not neglect to bring a profound problem
like racism on the agenda with his well-known
grotesque style. The setting is Baltimore, 1963 – times
when TV-mania reigned supreme and everyone spent
their days and nights in front of the screen. Tracy, an
obese young girl, has one dream: to get on “The Corny
Collins Show”, the local TV channel‘s popular show
one day. Finally her dream comes true and she finds
herself putting on a wonderful performance on this
youth, dance and music show. Reaching instant fame,
Tracy tries to use her status as “darling of the city” to
do some good in the students association, but her rivals
don’t intend to leave her alone. In this series of mad
events accompanied by the period’s popular dances and
music, John Waters’ “diva” Divine plays Tracy’s mother.
And on top of that, Waters surprises us in a small role.
Considered by some to be the director’s “tamest” film,
Hairspray’s musical stage adaptation was a big success.

bir put k›r›c› olan John Waters, Pembe Flamingolar’›n ve
Desperate Living’in baflar›s›n›n ard›ndan, banliyö yaflam›
ve çekirdek aile gibi günlük temalar üzerine bu nispeten
edepli ve ana ak›ma yak›n ama insafs›zca hiciv dolu filmi
gerçeklefltirmiflti. Waters’›n en iyi arkadafl› ve en s›k
kulland›¤› aktrisi Divine, porno sinemas› iflleten kocas›
taraf›ndan aldat›lan, son derece keskin bir koku alma
duygusuna sahip bir ev kad›n› olan Francine Fishpaw
rolünde. Tutkal koklayan ve kad›nlar›n ayaklar›na basan

Polyester ›s the f›rst f›lm that Waters made ›n the
80s unt›l
Hairspray ›n 1988. After the huge successes
of Pink Flamingos and Desperate Living, John Waters
made this relatively tamer and mainstream, but as
wildly satirical film that aimed at everyday themes such
as suburban life and the nuclear family. His best friend
and most recurring actress Divine played Francine
Fishpaw, a Baltimore housewife with an ultrasensitive
sense of smell, who is seriously cheated on by her
husband Elmer who runs a porno theater, despised by
her son Dexter who sniffs glue and stomps on women’s
feet (based on the real Baltimore character Stomper),
and her daughter Lulu, a high school slut who gets
pregnant. Her ideal suburban life becomes a living
nightmare, and she develops a drinking habit to escape
from a series of outrageous plots that threaten to drive
her insane. Polyester was the first film ever presented
in “odorama”; numbered scratch and sniff cards were
distributed at the movie theaters to be smelled when
the corresponding numbers showed up on the screen.
