Artistic leadership emphasizes winning and awards success. Arts managers need
to act as facilitators, conduits in the creation of cultural products. This includes
working with artists. Disney’s Michael Eisner describes it as editing other people’s
work, and puts across a case for discipline in managing creativity. Quintin Ballardie,
of the English Chamber Orchestra, thinks of himself as a good fixer, someone who
runs the show but is also one of the players. Yet even successful organizations may
not be viewed as following a straightforward agenda. There are affiliations between
cultural products and society; however, the process of creation is not a mirroring
role. Fashion brand Fubu internalizes a black American aesthetic; this core focus has
been widened like hip-hop music in order to attract more diverse audiences.
MoMA as an influential institution, serving as a model of a museum of modern art
and shaping the history of modern art, has been used in America’s ideological
battle against communism.
The management truism, ‘change is the only constant’, applies to arts organiza-
tions. An aesthetic leader with management skills is a coveted individual. Adopting
a bifurcated management structure, with dual executive positions, is one alterna-
tive solution. ‘Imaginization’ concepts associated with Gareth Morgan are exam-
ined: the (now annual) ‘New Displays’ exhibition was initiated by Nicholas
Serota, who sought to generate organizational change at the Tate Gallery; and
hoshin
represents an example of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s desire to be
more flexible and innovative.
