In
Jean Grondin: Vattimo’s Latinization of Hermeneutics. Why did
Gadamer resist Postmodernism?
We have many reasons to be grateful to Gianni Vattimo for his ongoing con-
tribution to philosophy and public life. Undoubtedly, his most decisive philo-
sophical impulses have come from the German philosophical tradition, and
mostly from the Holy Trinity of Nietzsche, Heidegger and Gadamer, who was
his teacher. Yet, he was not German, but a proud Italian, and, for some reason,
more able than others to carry this tradition further.
The issue I would like to discuss here is whether hermeneutics, and thus philo-
sophy itself, must be seen as a form of nihilism. If nihilism only means a
tolerance for the view of others to the extent that they do not violently limit the
liberty of others, one can agree with Gianni Vattimo. But if one understands
under “nihilism” the notion that there are no truths in the sense of adaequatio,
one can challenge this view.
Vattimo often faults Gadamer for not acknowledging fully the consequences of
his own thought, i.e. the nihilistic consequences of his hermeneutic ontology.
Yet one must ask: Why is it that Gadamer failed to proclaim a nihilistic herme-
neutics? In other words, why did Gadamer resist the postmodernism of some
of his followers?
Key words: Vattimo, Gadamer, nihilism, hermeneutics, language of being

Dean Komel: O hermenevti~nem odnosu
V pri~ujo~em razmisleku poskusimo razgrniti polje »hermenevti~nega odnosa«
v kontekstu opredelitve tavtolo{kega mi{ljenja dogodja.
vladavino Gestella.
Klju~ne besede: Hermenevtika, Heidegger, dogodje, govorica, svet
Dean Komel: On Hermeneutic Relation
The paper attempts to reveal the region of “hermeneutic relation” within the
context of the determination of tautological thinking of Enowning. The key
question is how this relation is determined by the self-withdrawal of the truth
of Being, pointing both to the openness of the world and to its “closedness”
under the reign of Enframing within the history of Being.

Donatella Di Cesare: Humboldtova dialo{ka hermenevtika
Katero mesto priti~e Humboldtu v zgodovini hermenevtike? In kaj dela njen
pot poseben v primerjavi s potjo sodobnih filozofov?
Humboldtu omogo~il prese~i meje Evrope v neznano lingvisti~no raziskovanje
dolo~a jezik.

Donatella Di Cesare: Humbolt’s Dialogical Hermeneutics
What is the appropriate place for Humbolt in the history of hermeneutics? And
what makes his path special in relation to the path of contemporary philosophers?
The paper wishes to provide answers to these questions by pointing to a pos-
sibility in Humbolt’s dialogical hermeneutics, which is still open for contem-
porary philosophical hermeneutics in at least two aspects: firstly, the herme-
neutic sense of the variety of languages has enabled Humbolt to transcend the
borders of Europe into the linguistic research of yet undiscovered most distant
continents, all the way to America. Secondly, he attributes primacy to the act of
speech, in which speech and language are realized. Now more than ever, we
have to acknowledge the relevance of his reflection on the limits of under-
standing as determined by language.
Key words: language, speech, act of speech, hermeneutics

Rémi Brague: Evropska kulturna zgodovina
V tekstu predavanja je postavljeno vpra{anje kaj je v evropski kulturni zgo-
dovini evropskega.
The paper explores the question as to what is European within the European
cultural history. This would, among other things, imply having to write the
European cultural history, which would emphasize its special features and
influences. For this purpose, a number of tools are listed. The final claim is that
one can speak of culture as history or history as culture only within the context
of Europe.
Key words: Europe, culture, history, cultural history, Antiquity
