The purpose of this Handbook is to provide you with information about the organisation and work of
the University and the School of Physics and Astronomy and to enable you to gain full benefit, both
academic and social, from your period of study in Cardiff. We aim to provide you with a variety of
programmes which are interesting, intellectually challenging, rigorous and up-to-date. We also aim
to give you training in a wide range of skills so that you will be well equipped for future careers in
science and beyond.
Full details of all our degree programmes and modules provided for undergraduates in the School of
Physics and Astronomy are given in the School’s Module Catalogue. The Module Catalogue helps you
to make informed choices about which programmes and modules best suit your interests and needs.
Generally speaking, module selection is made through your choice of degree programme (e.g.
Physics, Physics with Medical Physics, Astrophysics) but there is some further choice within each
programme. We give high priority to helping you individually with your studies, for example through
group work, laboratory work and small-group tutorials. We also encourage you at every opportunity
to take full advantage of access to academic staff for help and advice. We also welcome feedback.
There are plenty of opportunities for you to comment on all aspects of our work through module
questionnaires and the staff-student panel. Your comments are considered carefully, and we act on
them wherever possible. Through our concern for academic quality and for the welfare and well-
being of our students, we aim to ensure that your study period in Cardiff is enjoyable, fulfilling and
leads you to a worthwhile and rewarding career.
We have compiled the following information to give you an introduction to the School, its staff and
activities. I hope you find the Handbook helpful. We welcome comments on any ways in which it
can be improved. If you have any further questions, then start by speaking to your personal tutor or
year tutor. If you need to talk with me, I can be contacted easily through the secretaries in the
School’s General Office.
