Chapter 3: Methodology 3.1 Qualitative Study Method The qualitative method will be applied to this research. The research adopted
semi-structured interview which was designed develops an in-depth understanding of
HRM issues and HRM strategies of Taiwan-based companies in Vietnam. Develop the
interview questions and select target subjects are the initial step of interview process.
Based on the situation of interview then interviewer adjusts the interview questions that
adapt to each interviewee in order to obtain further information. The research main
focuses on Taiwanese expatriate managers in Vietnam who has experienced on cross-
cultural management and HRM relation.
3.1.1 Participants There are six Taiwanese expatriate managers has invited to participate the
interview. Due to ensure the data collecting relate to the research which focuses on
HRM within organization at Vietnam so that the participants who engage in in-depth
interview will be held high-level and mid-level managers in companies. Besides, the
participants have experienced on cross-cultural management and long-term working in
Vietnam. The interviewees are not limitation on age, gender and occupation, but it will
be restriction on level of position. There are two participants hold chief executive
officer (CEO) position, one participant holds chief financial officer (CFO) position, one
participant holds general manager position, one holds supervisor position and one holds

vice general manager position. Five of six participants are working in manufacturing
companies. Additionally, in order to achieve reliable data sources from participants, the
diversity of participants who work in differing industries from different area at Vietnam
