Writing about 'Culture'
Some IELTS essays questions want to draw you into the issue of culture, and
this
essay is a good example, mentioning it directly in the question.
Culture can be defined as:
· the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or
society.
Mediums such as TV and film have a big effect
on the way people think and
see the world, so clearly if people are watching mainly foreign films and TV,
this may have a big impact on their ideas and social behaviour.
It may
introduce people to new ideas, social behaviour and customs they
were not familiar with before.
Three Parts of the Question
As we have the prompt: “Discuss both these
views and give your own
opinion”, you obviously have to make sure you do the following three
things:
· Discuss the pros of showing imported foreign films and TV
· Discuss the pros of focusing
on national films and TV
· Your personal views
You can in incorporate your personal views into either of the first two
opinions (i.e. clearly make one of those opinions yours),
state your opinion
in the conclusion, or have a separate body paragraph with your opinion. Any
of these are acceptable.
In this example, the writer has a separate body
paragraph with a personal
opinion. This can make the essay longer and you have to be careful not to
repeat previous ideas. If this is a concern, choose
one of the other options to
give your opinion.
Now take a look at the model answer and note how it has been organised to
satisfy the three parts of the question.
