Scholars and Literati from Sinop in Ottoman Era 
 
 
Abracts 
One  of  the  most  important  cultural  and  science  center  is  Sinop  province  in  history.  Madrasah 
present in this region and scholars and litarary men showing this truth up. Therefore, in this paper 
submitting biographies and manuscript and printed works in Arabic, Persian and Ottoman Turkish 
of  scholars  and  statesmen  of  Sinop  as  a  whole  in  Ottoman  and  Republic  era  such  as  scholars 
Abdullah  Ahdî  b.el-Kâdı  Ali,  İlyas  Avni  Efendi,  Ahmed  Efendi,  Ali  b.Hüseyn  Efendi,  Hafız 
Ebûbekir lütfi Efendi, Hasan Hilmi Efendi, Halîl b. Resûl Efendi, İlyas b. İbrahim Efendi, Mah-
mud Efendi, Mümin b. Mukbil Efendi and Nebî Abdülbârî b.Turhan Efendi  which we detected 
from rare bibliographic books and Turkish Specialized Libraries will be very useful for science 
world. Thus, a significant gap will be filled related with cultural history of Sinop and researchers 
will be guided in this issue. Unfortunately such an important issue was never handled till today. 
Hence the hadith of prophet “who tells of the biography of a believer, honours his memory” and 
the verses “our works are documents whic introduce us. Thus, look at our works after us.” which 
Katip Çelebi the deceased mentioned in the introduction of his work “Keşfu’z-Zunûn” demonst-
rate  how  important  this  issue  is. Therefore,  submitting  the  names  of  their  works  pointing  their 
merit and perfection proves their scientific highness and services which they  did for humanity. 
Beside this the proverb “Nation  which does  not recognize  its elders can not proceed”  must be 
reminded here too. 
The cultural values of a nation brings together the styles of religion, language, 
history, art, literature, customs and customs and ways of thinking and living. These cultural values 
have  an  important  place  in  the  lives  of  nations.  The  nations  stand  sensitively  on  such  cultural 
values  and  transfer  them  to  the  next  generations,  without  harming  them  as  much  as  possible. 
Handling and examining your reminders, bringing the history of science and culture to the surface, 
and your glorious nationality contributing to these values.
 Taking the history of Sinop's culture to 
the surface is also contributing to these values of glorious nationality.

Öz 
Türkler Orta Asya’dan nereye göç ettilerse örf ve adetlerini gittikleri yerde yaşamaya ve yaşat-
maya devam etmiş bir millettir. Müslüman Türkler, dinin ruhunu iyi özümsemiş, kendi gelenek-
leriyle de bütünleştirerek Türk İslam kültürünü ortaya koymuşlardır. Bu ortak kültür sosyal ve 
toplumsal alanın her yerine nüfuz etmiş, toplumun temel taşı olabilecek teşkilatlara da öncülük 
etmiştir. Türk İslam Kültür Tarihinde 13.yüzyılda kurumsallaşan, 20.yüzyılın başlarına kadar top-
lumun dînî, iktisadi ve ictimâî yapısındaki oluşumları düzenleyen Ahilik teşkilatı da bu ortak kül-
türün bir ürünü olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. El yazması bu eserde Ahilik teşkilatının da bir esnaf kolu 
olan “debbâğ” yani dericiler esnafından, dericilerin pîri Sultan Ahi Evran’dan, onun soy ağacın-
dan bahsedilmekte ayrıca tasavvufi erkân ve adaba göre, nesiller boyunca aktarılmış esnaf ahla-
kına yer verilmektedir. Bu tebliğ, Anadolu Türk İslam Kültür mirasını, onun unsurları ve örnek-
lerini ortaya koymayı, dericilik esnafı ile ilgili bu yazma eseri günümüz Türkçesine kazandırmayı, 
Anadolu’da, Sinop’ta Ahilik teşkilatının izleri  ve  eserlerini araştırmayı hedeflemekte, ilgililere 
konunun önemini hissettirmeyi amaçlamaktadır.

Leather Tradesman in the Context of Ahilik Organization in the Turkish Islamic Culture 
 
 
Abstract 
Turks brought their customs and traditions to their new lands following emigration from Central 
Asia.  Muslim  Turks  have  assimilated  the  spirit  of  religion  and  integrated  Islamic  culture  with 
their own traditions. This common culture has pioneered many important organizations that have 
penetrated all over the social and public life. The organization of Ahilik which was institutiona-
lized  in  the  history  of  Turkish  Islamic  Culture  in  the  13th  century  and  organized  the  religious, 
economic, and social structures of the society until the beginning of the 20th century, emerged as 
a product of this common culture. In this handwritten book, the life and the family tree of Sultan 
Ahi Evran, a debbâğ or a tradesman of leather in the Ahilik organization was told along with the 
rules of conduct and manners expected from a debbağ. This paper aims to introduce the Anatolian 
Turkish Islamic Cultural Heritage, its elements and examples by making this handwritten book 
about the traditional leather tradesman available to the contemporary Turkish researchers interes-
ted in the traces and works of the Ahilik organization in Sinop and Anatolia.
