The Department of Emergency Medicine (ED)
at Walter Reed National Military Medical
Center serves as the safety net for military
beneficiaries in the National Capital Region
and is ready 24/7 to take care of all kinds of
emergencies. The staff includes over 20
physicians, 40 nurses, 15 medics/corpsmen
and 15 medical support assistants with a wide
range of academic interests and areas of
specialization. The department has 28 beds,
including three Fast Track beds for minor
complaints and two dedicated trauma rooms
for emergent resuscitations. Emergency
Department
personnel
are
the
first
responders for Walter Reed Bethesda in the
event of a Chemical, Biological, Radiological or
Nuclear Event (CBRNE) in the Washington, DC
area.
In addition to providing quality, emergency
care to our patients, the Emergency
Department is also highly involved in training
tomorrow’s leaders in military medicine. Over
the course of the year, over 100 interns and
students rotate through the Emergency
Department
.
Medical
students
from
Uniformed Services University and from
civilian medical schools (through the Health
Professions Scholarship Program), nursing
students, and medics/corpsmen/airmen all
train in our department.
Emergency Department care is a complex
team process. It all starts with patient
registration and triage performed by our
dedicated medical support assistants and
triage nurses to direct patients to the
appropriate level of medical care. Patients are
directed to either our main Emergency
Department or Fast Track for minor
complaints. The Emergency Department
charge nurse orchestrates the movement and
delivery of care by our dedicated team of
physicians, nurses and corpsmen/medics. Our
Consulting Services and departments of
pathology, pharmacy and radiology support
our patients’ clinical needs. Our patient
transporters provide additional valuable
services to meet our patients’ needs.
Level II Trauma Center Capabilities Will
Represent a New Platform for Patient Care
The Emergency Department is the gateway to
the hospital trauma care system and serves as
a Level II American College of Surgeons
Certified Trauma Center. Having deployed to
combat zones, the medical staff at WRB has
trauma experience rarely seen in the civilian
world
.
Throughout history, military medicine
has been pivotal to the advances made in
trauma medicine. This proud tradition
continues as the military’s Joint Trauma
System continues to provide quality, up-to-
date Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) that
benefit not only uniformed personnel in
combat, but also military beneficiaries and
civilians.
As the hospital looks to expand its capabilities
to provide expanded trauma care by
becoming a participating Maryland Level II
Trauma Center, the Emergency Department
will play an expanded role in stabilizing and
assessing these patients when they first arrive.
At Walter Reed Bethesda, we look forward to
the possibility of expanding upon our long,
distinguished history of caring for victims of
trauma.
