Many of our best football players played in the Olympic and
National USSR teams: Vitaliy Shevchenko, Nikolay Smolnikov,
Sergey Kramarenko, Valeriy Hajiyev, Yuriy Romenskiy, Isgan
dar Javadov, Mashallah Ahmadov, Yunis Huseynov and others
demonstarted the beautiful game and contributed significantly
to the history of Azerbaijani football. One of the gratest achie
vements of this period was a game, that took place in 1988 in
Seoul. Igor Ponomarev of Baku “Neftchi” team became an Oly
mpic champion in the United Olympic team of the USSR. During
these years many Azerbaijani football players, who played for
the youth USSR teams, became champions and prize winners
of the World and European championships. Azerbaijan was
represented in football by great names such as Vladimir Mik
haylevskiy, Ruslan Lukin, Igor Ponomarev, Arif Asadov, Vladislav
Kadyrov, Vyacheslav Lemesh, Tarlan Akhmadov, Vali
Gasimov and many others. Football players such as Nazim Su
leymanov became champions playing with “Alaniya” Vladikavkaz
and Vali Gasimov who became the first and the best Azerbaijani
football player for Moscow’s “Dynamo” team. In 1992 he was
declared the top scorer of the Russian championship, as well
as later becoming a prize winner at the championship in Spain.
There would not be such prominent football players, if it was
not not for our coaches, who prepared, trained and developed
them.
Azerbaijani football can be proud of such prominent coaching
personalities as Shirali Shiraliyev, Envar Guliyev, Siyavush Ibrahi
mov, Evgeniy Jarikov, Elshan Piriev, Konstantin Abramenko, Baba
Mustafyev, Eduard Jabrayilov, Alakbar Jafarov and many others.
In 1961 the National team of Azerbaijan became the champions
of the AllUnion Competiton of Schoolboys under the coaching
of Nazim Huseynov. The Azerbaijani United Team of Teenagers
became the winners of the Union Football Tournament, and
won 5 other tournaments in 1971.
In 1974 an extended counsel under the leadership of the Na
tional leader Heydar Aliyev took place in Baku. Very important
aspects about the allround development of Azerbaijani sport,
and in particular football, were ratified here.
Immediately after this historical event, wide field work in the
creation and development of football infrastructure was started:
the construction of new stadiums, sport schools and football
sections began. Azerbaijan can be proud of its great referees.
In the same year, the remarkable generation of referees, who
represented our country not only in USSR, but also overseas ga
ined real respect for the Referees School of Azerbaijan. In 1980,
E. Azimzadeh was a referee at the XXII Moscow Olympic Games’
final game and Rustam Rustamov was a referee the Union tour
nament in Moscow. We are proud of such referees as Boris Za
yonts, Tofiq Bahramov, Yuriy Grigoryev, Eldar Azimzade, Rustam
Rahimov, Teymur Valiyev and others. The most successful were
T. Bahramov, E.Azimzade and R. Rahimov. They were referees
in more than 100 USSR championship Premier League games,
and became the owners of gold medals for their refereeing and
repeatedly were included in the USSR’s 10 best referees list.
