Each  sound  and  act  has  own  position  and  special  quality.  These 

qualities  create  the  definite  m utual  relations  am ong  different  acts 

that  as  a  result  all  acts  are  characterized  with  the  direction.

M ENSURIYYE.  The  percussion m ugham  on the base  o f “C hahargah”. 

At  the  same  time  being  in  the  content  o f the  dastgah  “C hahargah” 

it  is  considered  one  of the  last  part  o f mugham.  It  is  known  that  it 

was  perform ed  in  the  dastgah  “R a s t” .  But  in  th a t  case  only  the 

rhythm ic  form   o f  “M ensuriyye”  was  kept,  b u t  its  m elody  was 

“translated”  to  the  base  o f the  dastgah  “R ast” .

M ESIH I.  The  last  p art  of the  dastgah  “R ast”;  the  part  between 

“H useyni”  and  “Shahnaz”  in  the  dastgah  “N ava”.

M ESNEVI.  1.  In  Azerbaijan  classical  music:  the  part  situated  between 

“Suzi-gudaz”  and  “Shushtar”  at  the  end  of the  dastgah  “M ahur” 

(that  p art  is  called  “M asnaviyi-sagil”  when  it  is  perform ed  at  the 

end  of the  dastgah  “R ahab”  again  between  “Shushtar”  and  “Suzi- 

gudaz”);

2.  In  Iranian  music:

a)  The  last  part  o f the  dastgah  “Shur”

b)  The  p art  situated  between  the  sections  “Ushshag”  and  “Ibadet” 

(the  other  variant  o f “Mesnevi”)  of the  mugham  “Bayati-Isfahan”.

M O A LIF.  The  p art  perform ed  between  the  parts  “B akhtiyari”  and 

“ Leyli  ve  M e jn u n ”  at  the  beginning  o f  the  m ugham   “ B ayati- 

Isfahan” .

“M UGHAM -DASTGAHI”  -  P R O JE C T .  One  of the  mugham  projects 

created  by  H eydar  Aliyev  Fund.  The  aim  of the  project  is  to  restore 

the  old  recordings,  all  parts  and  sections  of mughams  performed 

very  skillfully.  It  is  intended  to  record  the  dastgahs  directly  from 

the  concerts  and  to  save  them  for  future  generation.

M UGHAM   DASTGAH.  The  greatest  genre  of Azerbaijan  professional 

music,  the  perfect  and  classic  form .  The  m eaning  o f  the  w ord 

“dastgah”  is  (“dast”  -  butov  (whole),  “gah”  -  yer  (place))  the  whole 

place.  D astgah  is  to  perform  all  parts  -  part,  section,  rang,  tasnif in 

vocal-instrumental  form,  in  the  level  of mugham  composition.  The 

main  character  of the  dastgah is to  create the succession  of mugham 

parts  and  sections.  As  a  result  o f it  the  development  dram aturgy  of 

mugham  dastgahs  are  created.  M ugham  dastgahlari  are  the  musical 

c o m p o sitio n s  w ith  p erfect  fo rm a tio n ,  m a n y -p a rte d ,  in  chain 

structure.  Azerbaijan  mugham  dastgahs  are  the  followings:  “R ast”,

“S hur”,  “Segah”,  “C hahargah”,  “Bayati-Shiraz”,  “M ahur-H indi”, 

“O rta  M ah u r”,  “M irze  Hüseyn  Segahi” ,  “Zabul  Segah” ,  “K harij 

S egah” ,  “ S h u sh tar” ,  “H u m ay u n ” .  These  m ugham   dastgahs  are 

b a s e d   on  th e  fo llo w in g   m odes:  “R a s t ” ,  “ S h u r ” ,  “ S e g a h ” , 

“ S h u s h ta r ” ,  “ B a y a ti-S h ira z ” ,  “ C h a h a r g a h ” ,  “ H u m a y u n ” . 

Sometimes  on  the  base  of  a  mode  some  mughams  are  created,  so, 

the m ugham families  are created.  “R ast”,  “Shur”,  “Segah”  mugham 

families  have  been  created  in  Azerbaijan  music.  The  ghazal  (a  kind 

o f eastern poem) forms the text base of m ugham dastgahs.  Choosing 

o f  ghazals  depends  on  each  singer  and  the  character  of mugham, 

for  example:  ghazals  sung  in  “R ast”  are  not  sung  in  “Segah”  or  in 

“C h ah arg a h ” .  The  perform ance  period  o f  the  m ugham   dastgahs 

are  not  constant.  The  same  dastgah  can  be  perform ed  2-3  hours, 

30-40  minutes  or  10-15  minutes.

“M U G H A M   DUNYASI”  -   P R O JE C T .  One  o f the  mugham  projects 

created by Heydar Aliyev Fund.  During the project the symposiums, 

the  international  conference  “M ugham   art  in  the  21th  century” , 

different  festivals and competitions and the special projects prepared 

by  mugham  specialists  are  intended  to  be  organized.

M U G H A M   ENCYCLOPAEDIA  -   P R O JE C T .  The  combined  project 

o f  H eydar  Aliyev  F u n d   and  the  jo u rn al  “ M usigi  dunyasi” .  The 

publication  of the  project  dedicated to  Azerbaijan  mugham includes 

the  electron,  digital  and  book  variants.  The  electron  book:  http://

M U G H A M   ETU D ES.  Plays  composed  by  Azerbaijan  composers  for 

teaching  o f  folk  musical  instrum ents  m astery.  “M ugham   etudes” 

by  Adil  G aray  and  Said  Rustam ov  is  used  widely.

M U G H A M -IRS  -  (M U G H A M   H ER ITA G E)  P R O JE C T .  One  o f the

m ugham  projects  created  by  H eydar  Aliyev  Fund.  The  purpose  of 

the  project  is  to  restore  the  ancient  gram ophone  records  and  to 

prepare new CD albums.  During the project it  is intended to prepare 

th e  follow ing  CD  album s:  “G arab ag   k h an an d e leri”  (“G arab ag  

singers”),  “U nudulm uş  sesler”  (“F orgotten  voices”),  “A zerbaijan 

gadin  khanandeleri”  (“A zerbaijan  songstresses”),  “Instrum ental 

m u g h a m la r”  (“In s tru m e n ta l  m u g h a m s” ),  “ M ugham   u s ta la r i” 

(“M ugham   m asters”).
