On iki yafl›ndaki Francie’nin türlü sorunlarla
dolu hayat›ndaki tek ›fl›k, arkadafl› Joe. Baflar›s›z bir
müzisyen olan alkolik babas› (Stephen Rea), ak›l
hastanesine yat›r›lan intihara yatk›n ruh hastas› annesi,
zorla götürüldü¤ü okulda onu taciz eden papaz üst üste
gelince Francie (hârikulade Eamonn Owens), intikam
alma yoluna gidiyor. Hedefi ise, ailesine “domuzlar”
deyip duran dedikoducu, yafll› komflu kad›n Mrs. Nugent
(Fiona Shaw). ‹ngiliz telaffuzuyla dolaflan, Brady ailesine
tepeden bakan Mrs. Nugent, Joe’yu da (Alan Boyle)
kendi saf›na çekince, Francie’nin zaten b›çak s›rt›nda
olan dünyas›, baflkalar›n› da yan› s›ra sürükleyerek
devriliyor… Neil Jordan’›n filmlerindeki bahts›z
karakterler, ülkenin fliddetine, arzular› hilaf›na da olsa
bulafl›r. Küçük Kasap’›n yeniyetmelik efli¤indeki
kahraman› da kanl› bir intikam çemberine yakalan›yor
ama bunun ülkesiyle ilgisi yok. Jordan, Patrick
McCabe’den uyarlad›¤› ciddi bir delilik hikâyesini,
Trainspotting usulü, kapkara bir komedi olarak çekmifl.
En yerinde seçimi ise, Francie’nin büyümüfl halini (gene
Rea) anlat›c› seçmifl olmas›. Bu durumda, olaylara iki
ayr› gözden bakmam›z kolaylafl›yor. Her fleyi, hem çizgi
roman fantezileri yaflayan, zaman zaman Bâkire Meryem
hayaliyle (Sinead O’Connor) teselli bulan Francie’nin
gözüyle görüyoruz hem de “dünyan›n gözü”yle.

His father
(Stephen Rea), a failed musician and an alcoholic,
his suicidal mother who is institutionalized, and the
abusive priest at school are just too much to take, and
Francie (the amazing Eamonn Owens) decides to take
revenge. He picks the old gossip next-door, Mrs.
Nugent, who has a habit of calling his family “pigs”,
as his target. But when Mrs. Nugent, who speaks with
an English accent and looks down on the Brady family,
wins Joe over, too, Francie’s world tumbles down,
taking others with it… The doomed characters in Neil
Jordan films always get entangled in the violence of the
country, even though reluctantly. The Butcher Boy’s
protagonist, a boy on the edge of adolescence, gets
caught in a circle of bloody vengeance, but for once it
has nothing to do with his country. Jordan has adapted
Patrick McCabe’s serious tale of insanity as an
extremely dark comedy, Trainspotting style. His best
decision is making the older Francie (Rea again)
narrate the story. Thus, it is easier for us to see the
events from two different perspectives. We see all
through both the eyes of Francie, who lives comic book
fantasies and sometimes finds solace in an apparition
of Virgin Mary (Sinead O’Connor), and from “worldly
eyes”.

Neil Jordan aflk, ihanet ve saplant› hakk›ndaki
A¤latan Oyun’da, ülkesi ‹rlanda’n›n Michael Collins’le
iyice deflece¤i siyasi sorunlar›na da de¤iniyor.
Gerçi bir süre sonra, Jordan’›n soluk almadan
izledi¤imiz hikâyesinin asl›nda sand›¤›m›zdan çok baflka
bir konuda oldu¤unu anl›yoruz ama filme duydu¤umuz
ilgi azalm›yor. Bu çarp›c› hikâye, gözü kara IRA
savaflç›lar› Maguire ve Jude’a k›yasla gönülsüz denecek
bir IRA “gönüllü”sü olan Fergus (Stephen Rea) üzerine
kurulu. Fergus, karaderili ‹ngiliz askeri Jody’nin kaç›r›lma
olay›na kar›fl›yor ve iki adam, tuhaf koflullar alt›nda
dostluk kuruyorlar. Hem ‹ngilizler’in, hem IRA’n›n
peflinde oldu¤u Fergus, Londra’ya gidiyor ve Jody’ye

Actually, as it progresses, we realize that it tells an
altogether different story than we thought it did, but
that doesn’t keep us from getting intrigued by the film.
This striking story focuses on an IRA “voluntary”,
Fergus (Stephen Rea), who is quite involuntary when
compared to fanatical IRA warriors Maguire and Jude.
Fergus is involved in the kidnapping and the guarding
of the black British soldier Jody. In such strange
circumstances, the two strike up a friendship.
Following a series of unexpected events, Fergus goes to
London to seek and find Dil (Academy Award nominee
and the year’s biggest surprise Jaye Davidson), Jody’s
lover. The two fall in love before they know it, but
Fergus gets to find out that Dil is not the kind of
woman he thinks she is. Jordan is equally in control of
the tension he solidly builds at the beginning of the
film as he is of the love story that gets more touching
as the plot progresses. We will have the opportunity to
see Stephen Rea also in The Company of Wolves and
The Butcher Boy. The film’s Oscar-winning screenplay
is by the director himself. And the Dave Berry song that
gives the film its title is performed by Boy George.
