Birçok elefltirmen taraf›ndan, Orson Welles’in
Yurttafl Kane’inden sonra “en iyi ilk film” olarak
tan›mlanan Sudaki B›çak, Polanski’nin sonraki
filmlerinde s›k s›k kulland›¤› birçok motifi
içeriyor. Neredeyse tamamen sudaki bir teknenin
içinde geçen, klostrofobik, alttan alta k›skançl›k, ihanet
ve derinlerde s›n›f çat›flmas›n› iflleyen üç kiflilik bir korku-
gerilim dram› olan Sudaki B›çak, yönetmenin Polonya
yap›m› ilk ve tek filmi, ayr›ca Piyanist’e kadar, Polonya’da
çekti¤i tek film. Andrzej ile kar›s› Krystyna, gölde bir gezi
yapmak için yola ç›karlar. Rastlad›klar› genç bir
otostopçuyu yanlar›na al›p tekne gezintilerine davet
ederler. Andrzej, biraz k›skançl›ktan, biraz üstünlük
taslamak amac›yla genç adam› sürekli afla¤›larken bu
arada Krystyna’n›n ilgisinin yabanc›ya kayd›¤›n› göz ard›
eder. Gerginlik yükselir, kavga patlar ve yabanc› genç,

Recogn›zed by many cr›t›cs as the “second best
‘f›rst’ f›lm” after Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane,
Knife in the Water employs many of Polansk›’s
trademark styl›st›c elements. A claustrophobic
horror-suspense drama with a cast of only three,
Knife in the Water takes place almost entirely on a boat
in the water, and deals with jealousy, deception and
subtly class struggle. Andrzej and his wife Krystyna
ride towards a lake for a boat ride, and invite a young
and buff hitchhiker over to the boat. Out of jealousy,
and to patronize the young man, Andrzej constantly
belittles the young hitcher, ignoring his wife’s attention
drifting towards this stranger. Tension rises, a fight
breaks, and the young stranger falls off the boat into
the water with a knife in his hand… The much
insinuated class struggle in the film was incorporated
due to the pressure exerted by the then communist rule
of Poland. Also worth noting is that the young hitcher
was dubbed by Polanski himself. Knife in the Water is
still contemporary with its detailed character analyses,
cold psychological tension and high contrast black and
white images. The victorious challenger of the film
nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar
was Fellini’s 8

Macbeth is reminiscent of the Sharon Tate murders for
many critics. In masterfully pessimistic Chinatown,
the private eye Jack Nicholson is asked “Are you alone?”.
The reply, although fit for a film-noir, is very cynical:
“Isn’t everybody?”. He places the devil inside in the
center in Ninth Gate, Repulsion and Rosemary’s Baby.
“Unfortunately, I don’t make films about admirable
people. Probably weakness gives you more material for
description. In a similar manner, you make films
about someone you identify with because of his or her
vulnerability or because the character irritates you due
to his weaknesses. I think it’s boring to talk about Mr.
Wonderful.”
Roman Polanski takes an interest in almost all
kinds of performing arts. He twice adapted to stage
The Fearless Vampire Players that American distributors
had the first twenty minutes cut without consulting
him, as a musicals in Germany and France under the
name The Dance of the Vampires, which he had used in
the uncut European version of the film. He directed
the operas Rigoletto in Munich and Lulu in Italy.
He also staged musical plays such as Amadeus and
Metamorphosis, and continued to act on stage. For 2005,
he is adapting Charles Dickens’s classic tale Oliver
Twist.
“Today’s audiences are different from those of 40
years ago. They’re much more impatient now. They
want everything shorter, faster. Due to the tremendous
influence of television, the language of the ordinary
motion picture has changed. Audiences are accustomed
to other things which don’t necessarily create the same
type of emotions. But I’m not interested in fashion.
When I make a film, I make my film. I have to be
satisfied with it myself, and I somehow naively hope
that other people will share my taste.”
