Avrupa Afl›r› Ekspres’le Anvers’e giden bir
yönetmen (bizzat Alain Robbe-Grillet oynuyor),
asistan› ve yap›mc›s› birlikte yeni yapacaklar› filmi
biçimlendirmektedirler. Filmde rol vermeyi
düflündükleri oyuncu da (Jean-Louis Trintignant)
tesadüfen trendedir. Yönetmen ve ekibi, trende geçen ve
bir uyuflturucu kaçakç›s›n›n bafl›ndan geçenleri konu
edinen bir film yapmaya karar verir. Bu arada, ayn›
trende, filmde öyküsünü anlatt›klar› (ve yine Trintignant
taraf›ndan canland›r›lan) uyuflturucu kaçakç›s› Elias da
peyda olur. Yönetmen ve ekibi film hakk›nda konufltukça,
Elias’›n da maceralar› ve karakteri de¤iflime u¤rayacak,
kimi zaman da kaçakç› Elias’›n baz› davran›fllar›,
hikâyenin ayr›nt›lar›n›n de¤iflmesine neden olacakt›r.
Yönetmenle ekibinin trende giderken film projesini söze
döktü¤ü anlat› katman› ile bizzat projedeki karakterlerin
kendi yaflama haklar›n› sahiplenip canland›¤› anlat›
katman› bir arada yürür. Sürekli birbirlerini etkileyen,
bozan, de¤ifltiren, biçimlendiren, iç içe geçen bu iki ayr›
anlat› katman›n›n karfl›l›kl› flakalaflmas› ve paslaflmas›,
filmin belkemi¤ini oluflturur. Robbe-Grillet’nin en büyük
ticari baflar› kazanm›fl filmi olan Avrupa Ekspresi için,
çeflitli metinlerin ve anlat› katmanlar›n›n birbirini
karfl›l›kl› yap›sökümüne u¤ratt›¤› e¤lenceli bir sinema
denemesi diyebiliriz.

h›mself), h›s ass›stant and h›s producer shape
the›r new product›on on the way to Antwerp by
Trans-Europ-Express.
Incidentally, the actor they
think of casting (Jean-Louis Trintignant) is on the train,
too. The director and his team decide to make a film
that is set on a train and is about a drug dealer’s
adventures. In the meantime, on the same train
appears the drug dealer Elias (played equally by
Trintignant) whose story they tell in the movie project.
As the director and his crew talk about the movie,
Elias’ character and his adventures go through changes,
and sometimes actions of Elias as a character may
result in changes in the details of the film story. In the
movie, two narrative levels coexist: the first level where
on the train, the director’s team puts into words their
film project, and the second level where the characters
in the project claim their right to live. The reciprocal
jokes between these levels that interact, intertwine,
disrupt, change, shape each other, forms the structure
of the movie. Trans-Europ-Express, Robbe-Grillet’s
biggest commercial success, may be considered a fun
experiment where subtexts and narrative planes
permanently deconstruct each other.

‹stanbul’a yeni gelen bir Frans›z, gizemli bir
kad›nla tan›fl›r. Kad›n›n isminin gerçekte ne oldu¤u,
nerede yaflad›¤›, ‹stanbul’da ne yapt›¤›, Do¤ulu mu Bat›l›
m› oldu¤u belli de¤ildir. Adam, en az kendisi kadar
gizemli ve tekinsiz ‹stanbul’u birlikte dolaflt›klar› bu
kad›n›n çekimine kap›l›r, iliflkiye girerler. Fakat sonra
kad›n ortadan kaybolur ve adam umutsuzca onun izini
sürdükçe, içinden ç›k›lmaz bir labirentin dehlizlerinde
kaybolur. Alain Robbe-Grillet’nin ilk yönetmenlik
denemesi Ölümsüz Kad›n’da Marienbad’›n dura¤an otel
dekorunun yerini, bu kez büyülü, handiyse gerçeküstü
bir dura¤anl›¤a sahip ‹stanbul al›yor. Buras› oryantalist
imgelerle çizilmifl “efsanelerin ‹stanbul’u”dur. (Belki biz
de bunca y›l›n ard›ndan kendimizi ayn› konumda
bulabiliriz. Ne de olsa filmdeki ‹stanbul, art›k
varolmayan, nostaljik bir sis bulutunun ard›nda donuk
bir imge olarak kalan bir ‹stanbul.) Adam, tutsakl›¤›,
k›s›tlanmay› ve hapis hayat›n› vurgulayan bu efsanevi
dekorun içinde, kad›n›n ördü¤ü bir di¤er efsaneyi
çözmeye u¤raflacak; bu arada kad›nla tan›flt›ktan, onu
kaybedip tekrar bulduktan ve bir kaza sonucunda bu kez
ebediyen kaybettikten sonra, kendi belle¤inde
oluflturdu¤u ve sürekli tekrar edip yeniden
biçimlendirdi¤i, sorgulad›¤› bir kad›n imgesinin tutsa¤›
olacakt›r. Film, 1963’te Louis Delluc ödülünü alm›flt›r.

A French man, a newcomer to ‹stanbul, meets a
myster›ous woman.
Her real name, her address, her
job in ‹stanbul, her origin are all uncertain. He is
attracted to and has an affair with this woman with
whom he strolls around ‹stanbul, an equally mysterious
and uncanny city. Then she disappears, and as he
tracks her down in a hopeless effort, he is lost in an
impossible labyrinth. In The Immortal, Alain Robbe-
Grillet’s first attempt at filmmaking, the static hotel
decor of Marienbad is replaced by ‹stanbul with her
fascinatingly and surrealistically static ambiance. This
is “‹stanbul of the legends”, portrayed through an
orientalist imagery. (We may find ourselves in the same
position after all those years, inasmuch as ‹stanbul in
this movie is an ‹stanbul now non-existent, left as a
frozen image behind a fog of nostalgia.) The man tries
to figure out the mythical enigma woven by the woman
in this mythical decor emphasizing captivity,
limitations and prisons. After he meets, loses, finds
again, and loses her eternally after an accident, he
becomes a prisoner of the image of a woman that he
shapes, reshapes, questions and reconstructs in his
memory. The film was awarded the Louis Delluc prize
in 1963.
