these are to be considered as polysemantic words, otherwise it is a case of
homonymy. On the synchronic plane, polysemy is the coexistence of several
meanings in the semantic structure of the word. [5, s.43-45]. Thus, the main
similarities between the terms of polysemy and homonymy are as follows:
both of them refer to words having multiple meanings; both are possible
sources of lexical ambiguity. The distinction between homonymy and
polysemy is usually made on the basis of the relatedness of the senses:
polysemy involves related senses, whereas the senses associated with
homonymous lexemes are not related. Homonymy and polysemy both
involve one lexical form that is associated with multiple senses. But while
homonyms are distinct lexemes that happen to share the same form, in
polysemy a single lexeme is associated with multiple senses. Very often, the
distinction between polysemy and homonymy cannot be drawn precisely. A
criterion for distinguishing polysemous and homonymic expressions is a
historical or conceptual relationship between the words: So the words that
have the same historical origin or are related conceptually are said to be
polysemous. [9] So the key difference is that a polysemous word is one word
with different but related meanings, while homonyms are words with at least
two entirely distinct meanings that share a shape, usually both spelling and
pronunciation. For example, the meaning of the word “train”: 1. a connected
line of railroad cars with or without a locomotive 2. to teach, to develop or
form the habits, thoughts, or behavior by discipline and instruction. These
two meanings will come under the category of homonyms as there is no
conceptual relation between them. Now an example of polysemous word
“wood” 1.a piece of a tree 2. a geographical area with many trees. In this
example we can see the original relation between the two meanings
obviously. So it means that by the term polysemy we understand the
coexistence of many possible meanings for a word or phrase, while by the
term homonymy we mean the existence of two or more words having the
same spelling or pronunciation but different meanings and origins. Of
course, one of the meanings in the semantic structure of polysemantic words
is considered to be the basic meaning and the others are derived from the
basic one. It is evident that the figurative meaning of any word is always
based on its primary, i.e. nominative meaning. So the term polysemy
indicates the word with complex semantic system. Polysemy being an aspect
of semantic ambiguity that concerns the multiplicity of word meanings is an
everyday fact of ordinary language usage.
Taking all the above into consideration, we come to the following
conclusion that the main distinction between polysemy and homonymy is
based upon the below mentioned differences: Differences from the point of
view of relatedness of meanings. It means polysemy has different,
yet related

meanings. Homonymy has completely different meanings. Differences from
the point of view of origins: Polysemy has related word origins. Homonymy
has entirely different origins. Besides polysemous words are listed under one
entry in dictionaries. Homonymous words are listed separately. Polysemous
words can be understood if you know the meaning of one word. The
meaning of homonymous words cannot be guessed since the words have
unrelated meanings. To sum up all the above mentioned we define polysemy
as the coexistence of many possible meanings for a word or phrase.
Homonymy is defined as the existence of two or more words having the
same spelling or pronunciation but different meanings and origins.

Çoxmənalılıq və Omonimlik arasında oxşar və fərqli cəhətlər
Xülasə
Məqalə çoxmənalı sözlər və ononimlər arasında mövcud olan oxşar və
fərqli cəhətlərdən bəhs edir. Dildə sözün başlıca funksiyası izah olunur. Eyni
zamanda sözün forma və məzmununun nədən ibarət olduğu açıqlanır.
Çoxmənalı sözlərin semantik strukturunun mahiyyəti izah olunur. Dilçilik

elmində ayırd edilən əsas məna növləri qeyd olunur. Həm çoxmənalı
sözlərin, həm də omonimlərin səciyyəvi cəhətləri ayrı-ayrılıqda göstərilir.
Fərqli, lakin eyni zamanda bənzər olan bu iki termini birini-digərindən
fərqləndirməyin üsulları qeyd olunur. Çoxmənalı sözlərin və omonimlərin
leksik mənasının konkretləşdirilməsində mətnin rolu xüsusi vurğulanır.
Məqalədə müxtəlif elmi ədəbiyyatlarda coxmənanlılıq və omonimlik haqda
deyilən fikirlərə nəzər salınıb. Yekun olaraq belə bir nəticəyə gəlinir ki, əgər
sözlər arasında semantik cəhətdən bağlılıq varsa bu çoxmənalılıq, əks halda
isə omonimlik kimi qiymətləndirilir. Müşahidələr göstərir ki, dildə olan
ümumişlək sözlərin əksəriyyəti çoxmənalıdır. Təkmənalı sözlərə isə əsasən
terminlər aid edilir.
