1960-cı ildə bu quyunun içərisi 19 m dərinliyə
qədər təmizlənmişdir. Lakin onun təmizlənməsi bir
qədər təhlükəli olduğu üçün iş dayandırılmışdır. O
zaman quyunun tökmə torpağının içərisində yalnız
qazın kəllə sümüyü, 17 m dərinlikdə isə kiçik day-
ça skeleti tapıldı. 19-cu m-də isə 10-15 sm diametri
Onun dibinə
yaxın 0,5-0,6 m qalınlığında geoloji çınqıl təbəqəsi
vardır. Onun dibində bəzi gil qab parçaları tapıldı
(şək.23, №1674). Bu qırıqlar açıq-qırmızı rəngli,
üstü sarımtıl anqobla örtülən gil qaba məxsusdur.
Qabın üstü 2 cüt dalğavari, onların arası isə na-
In 1960, the inside of this well was cleaned to a depth
of 19 m. But cleaning it was dangerous and for this rea-
son the work was stopped. At that time, only a goose
skull was found inside the bulk soil of the well and also
a small foal skeleton at a depth of 17 m. The humus
was detected of four trees knocked down vertically to
a depth of 1 m at the nineteenth metre. The trees were
10-15 cm in diametre and they were arranged around
the edges of the rectangle. The well at this depth was
enlarged a bit. The excavation finds of this well aroused
great interest. One or two fragments of an unglazed clay
dish were found inside the bulk soil of the well, as was
a small fragment of a glazed clay dish. All these signs
showed that this well was dug before the 8th century
and was filled in shortly after being dug.
In 1960, we covered the surface of the well with
solid oak trees and with soil. There had been no oppor-
tunity since then to clean this well to the bottom. During
that time, the trees with which we had covered the well,
more than 50 of them, had decayed and the soil had fall-
en into the well. We decided to clean the inside of this
well in order to reveal its secrets. This well is located on
the bank of the river, 6 m from the ravine. It was decided
to place a 1.5 m wide and 2 m tall sapling into the well
from the river bank and to secure this sapling to other
trees to ensure the safety of the workers. After these
preparations, the sapling was thrown into the well from
the riverbank. Calculations indicated that there was less
work left to reach the bottom of the well (Fig.15a, 15b,
16a, 16b, 16c). In fact, it was detected that the well was
20 meters deep. There is a geological layer of gravel
0.5-0.6 m thick near the bottom of the well. Some clay
dish fragments were found at the bottom of the well
(Fig.23, No. 1674). These fragments belong to a light
red-coloured clay dish, the surface of which is covered
with a yellowish engobe. The surface of the dish is pat-
terned with two pairs of wavy lines; their middle is pat-
terned with thinly incised lines. It seems that the dish
was narrow-necked like a jug. Also found at the bottom
of the well was a very small fragment of a glass dish,
the surface of which was covered with a glossy reflet.
These finds showed that this well was dug at the outset
of the Early Middle Ages and Late Ancient Period in the

2nd-4th centuries AD.
It is thought that this well was dug for water. Thus,
it would be impossible to use these water sources while
the city was surrounded, though there are many springs
in the lowlands located around Gala and Salbir, and it
would be impossible to use them today also. That is
why digging a water well was of military importance.
But water was not drawn from the well though the depth
of the well crossed over the current level of the water-
course. Therefore, after a short while, the well was filled
in. The well was certainly not filled in in one day. After
3 m of soil had been poured into the well, a very lit-
tle foal happened to fall in and died because the lip of
the well was open. Other wells might have been dug in
other areas of the city to draw water from and some of
them produced water. After a while, ditch water chan-
nels were dug, with an aqueduct to the city from the
north.
After the inside of the well in Selbir was cleaned to
the bottom, stakes were hammered in to surround the
well from the upper side, and the middle area of these
supports was closed off with horizontal, parallel, nailed
long wooden pickets. The sapling entrance opened from
the riverbank was also closed off with trees (Fig.16d).
Visits to Sheki and Oghuz regions with the Korean
archaeologists were organised in 2012. The participants
viewed Sheki Khan Palace and archaeological materials
which are preserved in other museums. The expedition
members also visited the Bronze Age barrows found in
Karimli village, Oguz Region, by archaeologist Nasib
Mukhtarov, and they also viewed other ancient period
monuments (Fig.17, 18).
submission of the finds
Following the completion of the excavations, all
the finds were submitted to the Gabala Historical-
Regional Studies Museum.
masının hərbi əhəmiyyəti var idi. Lakin quyunun
dərinliyi çay yatağının indiki səviyyəsini keçsə də
oradan su çıxmamışdır. Buna görə də quyunu qaz-
dıqdan az sonra doldurmalı olmuşlar. Əlbəttə ki,
quyunu bir günə doldurmamışlar. Onun təxminən
içərisinə 3m qalınlığında torpaq töküləndən sonra
hələ ağzı açıq olan quyuya təsadüfən çox kiçik at ba-
Bu
zaman Şəkinin Xan sarayı və digər muzeylərində
saxlanan arxeoloji materiallarla, arxeoloq Nəsib
Muxtarovun Oğuz rayonunun Kərimli kəndində
qazıntı apardığı Tunc dövrü kurqanları, Antik dövr
abidələrinə baxılmışdır (şək.17, 18).
