MESSAGES IN nnnlnnnnn INVOLVING THE COVERNAME
"ENORMOZ" AND THE NAMES OF NUCLEAR PHYSICISTS, ETC.

     1.  For some time the covername "ENORMOZ" (which is not
a word found in Russian dictionaries, but is obviously based
on the English enormous) has been known to occur in one or
two New York - Moscow messages of 1944 in the system nnnnnnnn
but previously the context has not been readable enough to
limit the possible reference of the name.  Recently enough
context has been recovered to suggest a possible link between
ENORMOZ and war-time nuclear fission research.  The point of
connection is message 1773 of 16 December 1944, in which
first a man definitely connected with ENORMOZ is being talked
about and then, after a gap of ten group, there is talk of
OPPENHEIM and KISTIAKOWSKI.  The gap may conceal some indica-
tion of a change of subject; but the possibility that ENORMOZ
is connected with the work of Oppenheim and Kistiakowski is
too strong to be dismissed without comment.

     2.  It will be sufficient, for the rest, to give a trans-
lation of four messages.  These are still full of gaps; and
the nature of the problem is such that almost anything included
in the translation may be in the future be radically revised.

The message numbers and dates not enclosed in brackets
are the external ones; those in brackets are the internal ones.
Covernames are explained in brackets when the reference is
known.

     3.  New York - Moscow 850 [458], 15 June 1944:

     To VIKTOR.

--6F-- report MSN-1* [1 digit or group of letters
     wanting] EFRENT FLUKTUATSIYA [?efferent fluctuation?]
     --1F-- --2U-- --37F-- ...sion method--work according
to (?their?) (?specialties? ?specifications?).
(??Radiation?? [very doubtful]) --11F-- islanders
[British] and urbanites [Americans] final(ly) --14F--.
The urbanites stated to the representative of the
island [Great Britain] that the construction of a/the
plant on the island inevitably would directly contradict
the spirit of the agreement on ENORMOZ "(?earnestly?)
imputed by the Atlantic Charter".  At the moment --1U--
(Of) the island [Great Britain] in Carthage [Washington]
is looking into the details of the transfer of the work
to the island.  The work is the cause of the fact that
--2U-- left LAT [garble?] via --1F--.
