The war they got, however, was not the war they had been expecting or
wanting. Initially, there was considerable jubilation, with large numbers of
Germans indulging in nationalist enthusiasm as they marched off to the front.
Even a considerable number of socialists at least formally supported the war
effort, with only a minority of the Reichstag delegation opposing the decision to
vote for war credits. The emperor announced the end of civil war at home and
