Deepwater  Horizon.  The  explosion  killed  11  men  working  on 

platform and injured 17 others. On July 15,

 2010, the leak was 

stopped  by  capping  the  gushing  wellhead,  after  it  already 

released about 4.9 million barrels of crude oil. Before the leak 

was capped, estimated 53,000 barrels per day escaped from the 

well.  The  spill  caused  great  damage  to  marine  and  wildlife 

habitats and to the Gulf’s fishing and tourism industries.  

Gulf War, 1991 Kuwait 240 to 336 million gallons. 

After Iraqi forces retreated from Kuwait during first Gulf War,  

they  opened  the  valves  of  oil  wells  and  pipelines  in  a  bid  to 

slow onslaught of American troops. The result was the largest 

oil  spill  history  was  seen.  Some  240  million  gallons  of  crude 

oil flowed into the Persian Gulf. The resulting oil slick spanned 

an  area  just  larger  than  a  size  of  the  island  of  Hawaii.As 

additional  material,  I  wanted  to  tell  you  about  latest  major  oil 

spill occurred in Greece. The vessel Agia Zoni II, was carrying 

2,500 tonnes of fuel when it sank off the island of Salamis on 

Sunday.  Nearby beaches soiled by the oil. Five  days on, parts 

of the slick have drifted miles away to the resort of Glyfada, on 

the  Athens  Riviera.  Tank  trucks  are  working  to  clean  up  the 

pollution, helped by floating cranes and offshore anti-pollution 

vessels  –  including  one  send  by  EU.  It  remains  unclear  what 

caused  the  45-year-old  tanker  to  sink.  Its  captain  and  chief 

engineer, the only people on board at the time, have both been 

charged  with  negligence.  Reffering  to  the  information 

mentioned  above,  I  wanted  to  show  you,  that  nowadays  such 

disasters  are  unavoidable,  and  main  task  for  engineers  of  the 

world  is  to  make  process  of  producing  oil  on  offshore 

platforms, tankers and etc. much more safer.

OIL PRODUCT

People  have  been  using  oil  and  gas  for  four  thousand 

years. However, the modern era of oil and gas exploration and 

production  didn’t  begin  until  1846.  That  year,  Abraham 

Gesner,  a  geologist  based  in  New  Brunswick,  Canada  figured 

out how to distill paraffin from crude oil. This made crude oil 

far more useful and triggered a global boom is exploration and 

production.  

A potential oil trap is called a Prospect. Once a prospect 

has been identified, the next stage is to drill a hole into the top 

of  the  trap  to  see  if  it  contains  oil  and  gas.  It  is  incredibly 

expensive  to  a  drill  hole.  On  an  offshore  rig  is  may  cost 

$10,000 for every metre drilled. So if  you are  going to  drill  a 

hole 5000 metres underground it’s going to cost you 20 million 

million  dollars!  Consequently  geologists  have  to  be  pretty 

confident that they going to hit oil. If they drill too many ‘dry 

holes’ they will soon lose their jobs! 

A  hole  which  contains  oil  and  gas  is  called  a  well.  The 

oil and gas is under considerable pressure in the Earth’s crust 

so once a well is drilled into the reservoir rock, the oil and gas 

rapidly rises to the surface.  

At the refinery, the crude oil, which also contains a lot of 

gas, is processed. This involves separating out all the different 

hydrocarbons in the crude oil.  

So  far  we  have  thought  about  how  oil  and  gas  forms, 

how  geologists  find  it,  and  how  it  is  brought  to  the 

marketplace.  However,  this  talk  would  not  be  complete 

without a look at the politics of oil and why it is so significant. 

That will be the topic of the final part of this presentation.

As  we  mentioned  at  the  start,  its  hard  to  imagine  how 

modern society could function without oil and gas. The biggest 

single use of oil and gas is  a fuel  source. Without  oil and gas 

there would be no cars or planes and we would be more limited 

in  the  way  we  heat  and  light  our  homes,  or  cook  meals.  We 

can’t  simply  turn  to  electricity  instead  because  much  of  our 

electricity is produced by power stations that burn oil and gas!
