root of the mugham “Shur”. The dastgah “Shur” is considered the
g reatest an d the m o st m o n u m en tal d a s tg a h am ong the o th e r
dastgahs. Though some dastgahs such as “Shur-Shahnaz”, “A bu-
A ta”, “D ashti”, “Bayati-Turk” considered the independent dastgah
in fact belong to th e m ugham “S h u r” . “S h u r” has percussion
m u g h a m s by c o m p a ris o n o th e r d a s tg a h s (“ S em a y i-S h am s” ,
“O vshari”, “Osmanli” (“M aani”), “A rasbari” and so on.).
In laconic form the following parts and sections are in the content
o f the dastgah “S hur” : “M aye”, “Selmek”, “Haji Y uni”, “Shur-
Shahnaz”, “Buselik”, “Bayati-Gajar” (“Bayati-Turk”), “Shikesteyi-
F a rs ” , “A shiran” , “ Sham ayi-Sham s”, “Z am in -K h ara” , “H ijaz” ,
“Sarenj”, “N ishib-Feraz” . The mode “Shur” is one of the 7 m ain
modes in Azerbaijan music (U.Hajibeyli). Its structure consists o f
1-1/2-1 ton formulas three tetra cord connecting method; its sound
row is 10 stages, the 4th stage is tonic stage. The sound row o f the

S H U R M U G H A M N O T E S W R IT IN G . The m ugham “ S h u r” was
noted in the instrumental form by N.M am m adov in the performance
of A.Bakikhanov (1962), and it was also noted by A. Asadullayev
in the performance of E.M irzeferov (2006). This mugham is applied
very much in the activity of composer. F ik rat Amirov created the
symphonic mughams “S hur” and “K urd-ovshari” on the base o f
this mugham (1948).
SHUR-SHAHNAZ. Mugham including the parts “Shahnaz”, “D ilkash”,
“Shaddi-Shahnaz” in “Shur” mode.
SHUSHTER. The small dastgah including the parts “Bardasht”, “Amiri”,
“S hushtar”, “T arkib” . “S hushtar” is one o f the 7 main modes in
Azerbaijan music. Its structure is 1/2-1-1/2 tone formula with two
te tra cord style, the sound row is 8 stages, the 6th stage is tonic
stage. The 3rd, 6th, 7th stages of the sound row of mode contains the
base of m ugham “S h u sh tar”, the music examples created in this

“SH U SH T A R ” M U G H A M N O TES. The m ugham “S h u sh tar” was
noted in the instrumental form by A. Asadullayev in the performance
of E.M irzeferov (2006).
SINGING. The art of singinf vocal; being one of the ancient kinds of
music mastery it is based on the habits of delivering the figurative-
aruistic subject o f musical composition with the help of the musician’s
voice. Singing can be solo, ensemble and chorus forms. Singing is
usually sounded by the instrumental accompaniment.
S O L O . A piece o f music, dance or entertainm ent perform ed by only
one person. T he m ost im p o rta n t p a r t in ensem ble. T he solo
performance of mugham in different instruments is applied widely
in mugham mastery. In mugham ensemble the performance of the
singer is im portant as solo, but the solo of ta r and kam ancha in
different episodes are remarkable.
SO L O IST. A solo performer; the soloist - the singer in mugham mastery
p erfo rm s the song to th e accom panim ent o f the in stru m en tal
ensemble.
SONG. The form of vocal musical art connecting the music character
with the poetical melody. The vocal-instrumental episode based on
the intonations of some parts in the dastgahs.
SUM SU . The wind musical instrument prepared from the reed.
SY M PH O N IC M UGHAM . One of the genres in Azerbaijan music. It
was created by F ik rat A m irov in 1948. Basing the com position
characters and music materials of mughams F. Amirov created the
sym phonic plays “Shur” and “K urd-O vshari” and they were the
base o f this genre in A zerbaijan sym phonic music. T he m ain
character of the genre is the principle o f growth rising little by little
belonging the ch ara cter o f m ugham dastgah, its com positional
structure, dramaturgical movement line have been saved, at the same
time, the methods o f the symphonic working in the development of
m u g h am m elodies, v a rie ty have been also ap p lied . M an y o f
A zerbaijan composers have used this genre. Niyazi has composed
the mugham “R a st”, S. Alasgarov has composed “Bayati-Shiraz”,
F.A m irov “G ulustan Bayati-Shiraz”, T.B akikhanov “H um ayun” ,
“N eva”, “R ahab” and other symphonic mughams.
