Irene, cinsellik ve suç üzerine kurulu tek kiflilik
gösterisi “Pis ‹fl” ile (asl›nda, yönetmenli¤e ilk
ad›m›n› atan Moreau’nun 1982’de yazd›¤› bir oyun
bu) Fransa’n›n kuzeyinde turnededir. Köydeki

Irene ›s on tour w›th her one-woman show that
›nvolves sex and cr›me, “A D›rty Bus›ness”
(actually a play that the f›rst t›me d›rector
Moreau had wr›tten ›n 1982) ›n the north of
France.
When she runs into Dries, it’s the beginning
of a love story that bears an uncanny resemblance to
the show performed by Irene on the stage. But there’s
one setback: she kills her lover in her play. When the
Tide Comes In, was the title of a song written in 1968
by Raoul de Godewarsvelde. Both co-directing and
taking the lead in the film that took eight weeks to
shoot, Yolande Moreau teamed up with Gilles Porte
who wrote the script, co-directed and took on the
cinematography of the film. When the Tide Comes In
is a film about the frontier between two countries,
Belgium and France. The result is hard to classify: a
romantic comedy, or a drama. “It’s certainly not a
detective story, and it’s not really a comedy or drama
either. It’s a great love story. It’s a melodrama with
violins, dunes, the wind in your hair, seagulls and a bit
of blood in your hands.”

In 1982, she wrote and acted in theatrical
plays. In cinema, she acted in several films such
as Milk of Human Kindness and Amélie. When
the Tide Comes In is her directorial debut.
G›lles Porte
1965’te Lyon’da do¤du. T›p ö¤renimi gördükten sonra animasyon
filmler yapmaya bafllad›. 1989’da görüntü yönetmenli¤i asistan› oldu.
Görüntü yönetmeni olarak, yaklafl›k otuz k›sa film, birkaç belgesel ve
on uzun metrajl› filmde çal›flt›. Deniz Yükselince, senaryosuna ve
yönetimine katk›da bulundu¤u, ayn› zamanda görüntü
yönetmenli¤ini üstlendi¤i ilk filmidir. 
Born in 1965 in Lyon. He studied medicine,
but then started making animation films. He
became assistant operator in 1989. As director
of photography, he signed about thirty short
films, and several documentaries, as well as ten
feature films. When the Tide Comes In is his
first feature film, which he co-wrote and co-
directed as well as carried out the photography.

Taylor Brandon Burns ›s the world’s most famous
ch›ld telev›s›on actor.
He has fame, fans, a growing
fortune and a cherubic face. Life is like a sitcom world,
but in the real world, Taylor’s mom is broke and his
parents are getting a divorce. Worse, puberty looms on
the horizon, and it could mean the end of his career.
Childstar begins with Taylor and his mom flying to
Toronto to shoot the action-comedy blockbuster of the
year… The inspiration to make this film came to the
director, Don McKellar at an Oscar party in 1999 where
he met the 11-year old Haley Joel Osment, the child star
of The Sixth Sense, who turned out to be controlled and
mature. The title is borrowed from the Ron Sexsmith
song, “Childstar”. “This is a story about growing up and
finding your voice in a world where you are bombarded
by the American sitcom notion of family, happiness
and manufactured contentment. The grown-ups in this
story are all immature –the producers, the director, the
agents, the parents– and then there’s Taylor,
prematurely mature, swamped by the pop-culture
collective and still searching for some sense of genuine
family. When you find your sense of family, you find
your sense of self. Taylor Brandon Burns represents the
American pop-culture monster let loose in Canada.”

McKellar is a prodigious writer for the stage and TV. He co-wrote
the Genie-winning Thirty-two Short Films About
Glenn Gould and The Red Violin. His feature
directorial debut, Last Night that featured David
Cronenberg and was screened at the Festival,
earned him the Youth Prize at Cannes. He has
also starred in many international cinema and
TV features including Olivier Assayas’ Clean and
David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ.
