45 Yeni Zelanda’n›n ileri gelen yazarlar›ndan Maurice Gee’nin ayn› ad› tafl›yan ve 1969’da Bat› Auckland’da geçen üçüncü roman›ndan yönetmen Brad McGann’›n uyarlamas›, Baba Oca¤›’n›n öyküsünü günümüze tafl›yor. Gee bu konuda “Brad öykünün kemiklerinin üzerini taze etle kaplad›” fleklinde bir yorumda bulunmufl. Çat›flmalardan yorgun düflmüfl savafl foto¤rafç›s› Paul, babas›n›n ölümü üzerine do¤du¤u yere, Yeni Zelanda’daki gözden uzak bir kasabaya döner ve ard›nda b›rakt›¤› geçmiflle yüzleflir. Hiç beklemedi¤i bir flekilde, ilk sevgilisinin k›z›, on alt› yafl›ndaki Celia ile yak›nlafl›r. Ancak aileleri de dahil birçoklar›, arkadafll›klar›n› hofl karfl›lamaz ve Celia ortadan kaybolunca da Paul bafl flüpheli haline gelir. The director Brad McGann’s adaptation takes the story to modern day Central Otago, on which Gee commented, “Brad has put new flesh on the bones of the story.” Paul, a battle-weary war photographer, returns to his remote New Zealand hometown, when his father dies, and faces the past he left behind. To his surprise, he also finds the sixteen- year old Celia, the daughter of his first girlfriend. But many, including the members of their families, frown upon the friendship, and when Celia goes missing, Paul becomes increasingly persecuted as the prime suspect. As the violent and urgent truth emerges, Paul is forced to confront the family tragedy and betrayal he ran from as a youth, and to face the grievous consequences… “I knew at the outset of making In My Father’s Den that I wanted to make an intimate and subjective film about a damaged soul, that began gently –almost too quietly– which slowly (almost invisibly) became an edgy and unrelenting mystery, culminating in a violent confrontation between the past and present. Baba Oca¤›, ilk uzun metrajl› sinema filmidir. He grew up in New Zealand and studied at the University of Otago, before attending Swinburne Film & Television School in Melbourne, Australia. While at Swinburne he made the short film Home Away From Here. For the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, he made a documentary called Come As You Are and wrote and directed a short TV drama called It Never Rains, which also screened at international film festivals. In 1996, he returned to New Zealand, wrote and directed the short film Possum that was picked up by many international film festivals and received many awards such as the Most Imaginative Film at Odense, Denmark and the International Jury Prize for Best Short Film at Gijon, Spain. She asks her womanizing cousin Cho-won to seduce the girl, and offers herself as a reward. Meanwhile, he has set his eyes on Lady Suk Yung, the “Gates of Chastity”. But things get an unexpected turn when he develops genuine feelings for his prey… This Korean adaptation is an addition to the previous Western versions, Roger Vadim’s in 1959, Milos Forman’s Valmont in 1989, Stephen Frears’ in 1988 and the Cruel Intentions in 1999. “I often listen to Bach’s music, and at one point an image came into my mind – the image of people wearing hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) combined with Bach’s music. I was curious about how it would look on the screen. At the same time I was trying to think of a story, and I suddenly remembered the costumes and acting in the film Dangerous Liaisons. I bought the book then and read it, and it is really a great novel. It contains every human emotion: love, revenge, hate, betrayal, separation, death... it has everything in it. His most notable titles include the short Homo Videocus, which screened at festivals including Sundance and Vancouver, and the award-winning feature films An Affair and Asako in Ruby Shoes.
