annesiyle birlikte oturan görme özürlü, ac›mas›z
Francis Black’in çiftli¤inde çal›flmaya bafllar.
Kocas› taraf›ndan ezilen ve cinsel duygular›n› sürekli
bast›ran Rachel ile Mike, aralar›ndaki cinsel çekime daha
fazla karfl› koyamayarak beraber olmaya bafllarlar.
Francis’in öfkesi ve tahammülsüzlü¤ü gitgide artar ve
sonunda Francis, Mike’› çiftlikten kovar. Mike’›n çiftlikten
ayr›lmas›yla Rachel, kocas›yla onun aras›nda bir seçim
yapmak zorunda kal›r ve Rachel, karanl›k geçmiflinden
haberdar olmad›¤› Mike ile kaçar. Yazar ve yönetmen
Eleanor Yule, Körü Körüne’nin senaryosunu yazarken
Danimarkal› ressam Hammershoi’nin tablolar›nda
görülen karanl›k iç mekânlardan esinlendi. Bu yüzden de
filmin kahramanlar›, kendi havas›z iç dünyalar›n›n esiri
olarak betimlendiler. “Tablolardaki kad›nlar
çevrelerindeki karanl›kta gizlenmifl, d›flar›daki ›fl›¤a
özlemle bakar gibiler. Film karanl›kta bafll›yor, çünkü

Do¤alc› de¤il, daha yo¤un bir dünyada geçen bir film
yaratmak istedim. Hayat›m›z›n en karanl›k anlar›n›n
bazen nas›l en parlak anlar›na dönüfltü¤ünü incelemek
istedim. Sonra, Emile Zola’n›n Thérèse Raquin’ini
günümüze yepyeni bir yolla uyarlamay› düflünmeye
bafllad›m.”

A Dan›sh backpacker, M›ke Hammersho› arr›ves ›n
Scotland, and starts to work on a farm owned by
Franc›s Black, a bl›nd and b›tter man l›v›ng ›n a
decay›ng mans›on w›th h›s mother.
Mike realises
that the bitter Francis exerts a domineering power over
his sexually repressed wife Rachel. Unable to resist
each other, Rachel and Mike become lovers. As the
sexual tension increases, so does Francis’ jealousy and
rage, and Francis fires Mike. Unaware of his dark past,
Rachel decides to run away with Mike. When writer-
director Eleanor Yule was writing the screenplay for
Blinded, she was inspired by the haunting interiors of
the Danish painter Hammershoi. And so her characters
came to occupy an airless, domestic world of their own.
“In the paintings, the female subjects are concealed in
the darkness of their surroundings, while looking
longingly out to the light outside. When the film opens,
it is shrouded in darkness because Francis has shut
out all the light. (…) I wanted to make a film that was
not naturalistic but that took place in a heightened
world. I was so keen to explore how the darkest
moments in our lives can sometimes turn out to be the
brightest. I then began to think about the idea of
bringing Emile Zola’s ‘Thérèse Raquin” up-to-date in
a new kind of way.

Eleanor Yule
Glasgow ve Bristol üniversitelerinde sinema e¤itimi görürken,
BBC için Impulse adl› ilk k›sa filmini çekti. ‹kinci k›sa filmi A Small
Deposit, BAFTA’da aday gösterildi. BBC için ödüllü birkaç biyografik
belgesel, ard›ndan ‹skoç ressamlar hakk›nda bir dizi belgesel ve ünlü
oyuncu Christopher Lee’nin rol ald›¤› Ghost Stories for Christmas ad›
alt›nda dört k›sa film çekti. BBC’den ayr›ld›ktan sonra New York,
‹talya ve Edinburgh’da film festivallerinde gösterilen ilk k›sa sinema
filmi Lost’u yapt›. Körü Körüne, yaz›p yönetti¤i ilk uzun metrajl›
kurmaca filmdir. 
She studied film at Glasgow and Bristol University making her
first short film, Impulse, for BBC as a student. Her second short,
A Small Deposit, was nominated for a BAFTA. She directed several
award winning biographical documentaries for the BBC. More
recently she directed documentaries about
Scottish painters, The Scottish Colourists. Her last
series for the BBC were four thirty minute
dramas entitled Ghost Stories for Christmas with
veteran actor Christopher Lee. She left the BBC
to write and direct her own films. Her first short
drama Lost was screened in New York, Italy, and
Edinburgh. Blinded is her first feature film.

Garden State, TV komedi dizisi “Scrubs”›n popüler
y›ld›z› Zach Braff’›n kendi kiflisel
deneyimlerinden, baflkalar›n›n anlatt›¤›
hikâyelerden ve yerel gazetelerden kesilmifl
kupürlerden esinlenerek yazd›¤› bir yetiflkinli¤e
geçifl öyküsü. Braff’›n hem yazarl›k, hem yönetmenlik
hem de oyunculuk yapt›¤› ve New Jersey’de çekilen bu
ba¤›ms›z film, ilk olarak Sundance’te gösterildi ve hem
elefltirmenlerin hem de seyircinin gözünde baflar›l› oldu.
Garden State, ifl bulmakta zorlanan aktör Andrew’ün
annesinin cenazesi için New Jersey’ye dönüflünü
anlat›yor. Babas›n›n (Ian Holm) yazd›¤› ilaçlar› b›rakan
Andrew, tam bir yabanc›laflm›fll›k halinde geçmifliyle
yüzlefliyor, eski arkadafllar›yla karfl›lafl›yor; biraz tuhaf ve

Garden State ›s a gentle and s›ncere com›ng of age
story that Zach Braff, the popular star of the TV
s›tcom “Scrubs”, wrote ›nsp›red from h›s personal
exper›ences, tales told by others and ›tems cl›pped
from local newspapers.
This independent film
written, directed and acted in by Braff himself was shot
largely in New Jersey (the Garden State), premiered
first at Sundance, and was successful both in critics’
and the audiences’ eyes. The film follows the struggling
actor Andrew as he returns to his hometown in new
Jersey for his mother’s funeral. Off of his medication
prescribed by his father (Ian Holm), he faces his past,
in a state of alienation, he meets with his old friends;
learns to feel again after meeting a strangely disturbed
girl (Natalie Portman), and has to reassess his life.
“When I first wrote the movie, I thought it was about a
guy who comes home and through falling in love with
someone finds the freedom to open up to his dad and
finally have the conversation they never could have
before. But when I got into the editing room, I realized
that it was about a guy who in opening up to his father,
realizes he’s free for the first time to fall in love.

He started acting at a renowned children’s acting camp, and
attracted the attention of a well-connected talent scout. He debuted
on TV in “My Summer as a Girl” in 1994 after taking part in
Woody Allen’s Manhattan Murder Mystery
(1993). He attended college at Northwestern
University where he wrote and directed several
short films. He went on to co-star in Getting to
Know You, and his role in The Broken Hearts
Club (2000), paved his way for the TV sitcom
“Scrubs” where he played the intern JD. Garden
State is his directorial feature debut.

Four artsy friends discuss the differences of comedy
and tragedy, and the merits of comedy over tragedy.
One of them recounts the story of a young woman
called Melinda who shows up uninvited at a dinner
party, and to prove their points, two of the authors in
the group tell the rest of Melinda’s story in their own
styles. The film then splits to twin narratives that begin
with the same incident but follow different plots, tragic
and comic. In fact the origin of both claims are similar:
tragedy holds a tinge of comedy, and likewise comedy
has to have a tragic subplot. Radha Mitchell as Melinda
is remarkable in her dual roles, one a typical neurotic,
and the other very Annie Hall-ish. “I chose the name
Melinda because I type my scripts, and Melinda is easy
to type. It’s the truth. All the names I use for my films
are either very short, or easy to type.”

was expelled from both. 1966 saw the successful
opening of his first Broadway play. In 1969 he
made his first feature film as director,
scriptwriter and actor. Since that period he has
made or starred in approximately one film a year
and became one of the most efficient
actor/directors of American cinema.
