ABSTRACT
PRACTICES TO INCREASE EFFICIENCY VIA POPULATION CONTROL IN HONEY
BEES (APIS MELLIFERA L.) COLONIES
Increasing productivity in beekeeping, in other words, getting high performance from
colonies, is not a too easy subject to buy a beehive hive and leave it in the flora at the beginning in
the season by itself.
The productivity in honey bee colonies is a large scale concept
with many
factors such as environmental factor as climate and flora, using qualified breeder, care, feeding, bee
health, and government policies and regulations related to this subject.
Since the preference of
climate and flora is a subject under the control of beekeeper, it is possible to say that the efficiency
of beekeeping is almost entirely dependent on beekeepers and their practices.
Population regulation
should be done to increase productivity in honey bee colonies
.
Purpose of population control; is to
keep the power of the colony at the desired level regardless of the season of the year.
The
population consists of nurse bees who are in the consumer situation and serve in the hive and
worker bees that meet the needs of the colon from the outside.
The honey yielded in the hive is the
amount left after consumption of the nectar brought
by the worker bees
.
This
refers to fertility in the
colon and is called population dynamics.
Colonies with high population dynamics make honey
according to population levels and the number worker bees while those with low populations tend
to incubate
. That is, one of colonies having the same power is concentrating on the incubator
production while the other one is making honey. In other words, the more worker bees there are in
the population, the greater the production; otherwise, even if the population is strong, honey cannot
be obtained at the desired level.
