EXTENDED ABSTRACT 
Purpose and Scope : The city of Trabzon located in the North of Turkey and The Eastern 
Blacksea section of the Blacksea Region,  has had an important place throughout history owing 
to the fact that it is a harbor city.  Since it is located on a trade network, it has hosted many dif-
ferent civilizations since ancient periods.  After the conquest of Trabzon, churches were trans-
formed into mosques for the Islamization and Turkification of the city and later mosques were 
started to be built as Turkish Period Buildings. Later, İskender Pasha Mosque was built in the 
area accepted as the city center, known in the past as Non-Muslim (Gavur) Square, and today 
as Meydan (Square). The mosque which had been formed with the single unit mosque approach 
of the Ottoman mosque typology has reached the present by being expanded through various 
additions. Specifically, an examination of old engravings and photographs reveals that Iskender 
Pasha Mosque has taken its present form by undergoing changes many times. The purpose of 
the study is to trace the physical development of the Iskender Pasha Mosque and Social Complex 
which carry importance for the city. The scope of the study is the evaluation of Iskender Pasha 
Mosque  in  the Trabzon  city  square  as  well  as  other  buildings  named  after  Iskender  Pasha. 
Method: Historical documents and photographs have been reached through the literature revi-
ew method about Iskender Pasha Mosque. Documents accessed through different sources were 
examined and compiled for the study. Buildings located at the city square and named after 
Iskender Pasha were examined through on-site observations at different times. The buildings 
were documented with photographs and recorded.  The obtained data were compiled and crea-
ted the main set up of the study.  
Short Review of Literature: Iskender Pasha Mosque which 
is at an important status for Trabzon city preserves its value as a monument which had been 
existent since the past. The building located at the most important position of the city – its cen-
ter – is characterized as a work which is worth examination.  The mosque has taken its name 
from Iskender Pasha who has served as the Governor of Trabzon for long periods of time. 
Iskender Pasha has endeavored for the public development of Trabzon during the period of his 
Governorship and has left behind many works. The first work of Iskender Pasha is the Iskender 
Pasha fountain which is situated in the present city square in 1519. He had the second Iskender 
Pasha  Fountain  built  in  1523  at Aşağıhisar  (Lower  Hisar).  In  1529,  he  had  Iskender  Pasha 
Mosque and Iskender Pasha Medrese (Madrasah) built. Trabzon Governor Iskender Pasha died 
in 1533 and was buried near his mosque. It can be understood from the headpiece on his tomb-
