Symbol pruské černé orlice a barvy
meziválečné republikánské vlajky jsou
jedinými tradičními prvky této dekorace,
snaha o diskontinuitu s předchozími
nedemokratickými obdobími se projevila
i ve zcela zvláštní struktuře vyznamenání
a ve způsobu jeho udělování.
Záslužný řád Spolkové republiky
Německo (Verdienstorden der Bundesre-
publik Deutschland) je udělován za civilní
i vojenské zásluhy a tvoří jej celkem osm
tříd. Je udělován německým občanům
i cizincům, udělená třída závisí nejen na
míře zásluh, ale také na věku. Zvláštní
stupeň tohoto řádu je určen jednak pro
osobu spolkového prezidenta, jednak pro
vyznamenání hlav jiných států.

SPOLKOVÁ REPUBLIKA NĚMECKO
FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY
German faleristics are among the most extensive as far as the number of their honours, but this is given by the
fact that until World War I a large number of decorations from German states were included. The fi rst order
decorations started to appear on German territory in the 15th century, but their greatest expansion came in the
18th and 19th centuries. Individual orders are named after their patron saints (the Order of St. Hubert), after
important people in German history (the Order of Albrecht the Bear), and also after national symbols (the
Order of the Black Eagle). Considering the fact that Prussia played a decisive role in the unifi cation of Germany,
its decorations gained a priority position in the new state, and the Prussian faleristic tradition also infl uenced
the creation of new decorations in all of the state entities that Germany went through in the 20th century. This
infl uence of Prussian symbolism (the black eagle) also partially appears in the Federal Republic of Germany,
when in 1951 a decision was made on the creation of an entirely new federal honour, intended to award merit
in the renewal of the country. The symbol of the Prussian eagle and the colours of the republican fl ag from
between the wars are the only traditional elements of this decoration; an eff ort to create discontinuity with
its non-democratic periods also appears in the entirely unique structure of honours and in the way they are
conferred.
The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland) is
conferred for civil and military merit and is made up of a total of eight classes. It is conferred upon both German
citizens and foreigners, and the classes conferred depend not only on the degree of merit, but also on age.
A special degree of this order is intended for the federal president ex offi
cio and to honour foreign heads of state.

I když si Nizozemsko vybojovalo samo-
statnost již v 16. století, jeho řádové
dekorace vznikly až na počátku 19. sto-
letí a pod přímým francouzským vlivem.
Ovšem Královský nizozemský řád z roku
1807 měl pouze jepičí život a zanikl ještě
před anexí země Francouzským císař-
stvím. Teprve obnovení Nizozemského
království v roce 1815 přineslo také nové
záslužné dekorace – Řád nizozemského
lva (za civilní zásluhy) a Vojenský řád
Vilémův (za vojenské zásluhy). Další řádové
dekorace vznikly v polovině 19. století (Řád dubové koruny
a Řád zlatého lva), ale s oddělením Lucemburska přešly
mezi jeho záslužná vyznamenání. Teprve na přelomu
19. a 20. století vznikly další řády – Řád oranžsko-nassav-
ský a Oranžský domácí řád, které vycházejí z původní
dynastické tradice – čímž byl systém nizozemských
vyznamenání završen a do budoucna jej doplňovaly pouze
Although the Netherlands won its independence in
the 16th century, its order decorations were started
at the beginning of the 19th century and under direct
French infl uence. Of course the Royal Dutch Order
from 1807 had only a brief life and died away before
the country’s annexation to the French Empire. The
renewal of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1815
also brought new decorations of merit – the Order
of the Netherlands Lion (for civil merit) and the
Military Order of William (for military merit). Other
order decorations arose in the mid-19th century
(the Order of the Oak Crown and the Order of the
Golden Lion of Nassau), but with Luxembourg’s
separation, its honours of merit went with it. Only
at the end of the 19th century and the beginning
of the 20th century did other orders emerge – the
Order of Oranje-Nassau and the House Order of
Oranje, which come from its original dynastic tradi-
tion – thereby the system of Netherlands honours
reached its culmination; in the future it was only
complemented with commemorative
medals. The boldest element of
the Netherlands’ order tradition is
the use of the colour orange on the
ribbons, which relates to the familial
origin of William of Orange, the fi rst
leader of an independent state of the
Netherlands.
The Order of the Netherlands
Lion (De Orde van de Nederlanse
Leeuw) is the highest honour for
civil merit, which is bestowed on
both domestic citizens as well as
foreigners.
