davku – a sice představovat Evropskou unii a její členské
státy pokud možno v co největší pestrosti a zajímavosti

he historic fi rst Czech presidency of the European
Union is both a challenge and an opportunity for
our country. It is a challenge because we are taking the
helm at a diffi
cult time in a world that is changing ever
more rapidly. It is an opportunity because it gives Czech
citizens the opportunity to get to know the European
Union far better than they have until now. This exhibi-
tion is also up to that task – representing, as much as
possible, the European Union and its member states in
the greatest diversity and interest in topics.
The exhibition, “The Beauty of European Faleristics,”
represents individual European Union member states
in an untraditional form: The honours each individual
country confers for service demonstrated in all spheres
of human endeavour. In this way, we have the
opportunity to get to know more tangibly the faleristic
traditions of individual European Union member states.
Upon closer inspection, we fi nd that these traditions
are similar in most countries, because they come from
similar civilisational roots.
By making reference to the beauty of individual
honours and their diversity, the exhibition enables us to
understand one of the foremost maxims of European-
ness – unity in diversity. It is no accident that this phrase
is also the motto of the European Union. It is a reference
to the fact that through the EU, Europeans have united
in a common eff ort for peace and a certain standard
of living, and that the presence of various cultures,
traditions and languages is a distinct advantage for the
European continent.

P
Jana
(Rytířský a špitální řád svatého Jana Jeruzalémského),
jež pečovalo o poutníky ke Svatému hrobu a chránilo je
se zbraní v ruce. Ve stejné době vznikl v rámci počínající
reconquisty na Pyrenejském poloostrově Vojenský
rytířský řád z Alcantary. O něco později vznikají další
rytířské řády, ve Svaté zemi Řád vojenských bratří templu
(templáři), Řád ochránců Božího hrobu, Řád Panny
Marie Jeruzalémské (němečtí rytíři), na Pyrenejském
poloostrově Vojenský rytířský řád z Calatravy, Řád
svatého Jakuba od meče, Řád svatého Benedikta z Avizu
a další.
začali obklopovat nejvěrnějšími šlechtici a dekorovali
je viditelnými odznaky. Postupně tak vznikla řádová
společenství, přičemž členství v nich bylo symbolem
zásluh a věrnosti. V Anglii byly založeny Řád podvazku
(roku 1348) a Řád lázně (roku 1399), v Savojsku Řád
obojku (roku 1360), v Uhersku Řád draka (roku 1408),
v Burgundsku Řád zlatého rouna (roku 1430), v Dánsku
Řád slona (roku 1462), ve Francii Řád svatého Michala
(roku 1469). Na rozdíl od duchovně -rytířských řádů
T
he term ‘faleristics’ is based on the Greek word
phalera, which indicated the metal decorations
on helmets. The Romans adopted the word from the
Greeks as phaleare, a term for military honours worn
on armour. The term faleristics developed from these
words to mean the scientifi c fi eld, auxiliary to historical
science, which is concerned with the orders, medals and
insignia conferred upon individuals or groups of people
for merit in all fi elds of human endeavour.
The most valuable visible decorations of merit are
orders, which now exist in nearly all countries world-
wide. Their birthplace, however, was Europe, in whose
civilisational framework the originally spiritual-chivalric
orders developed over the centuries into orders as deco-
rations of merit. The fi rst order societies began in the
second half of the 11th century and were related to the
military confl icts between Christianity and Islam in the
Holy Land and on the Iberian Peninsula. The fi rst soci-
ety, the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John
of Jerusalem, was formed in the year 1059, in St. John’s
Church in Jerusalem; it cared for pilgrims visiting the
Holy Sepulcher and protected them with arms in hand.
At the same time, the Military Order of Alcantara was
formed as part of the reconquista taking place on the
Iberian Peninsula. Other chivalric orders were formed
later; in the Holy Land there were the Order of the
Temple (the Templars), the Order of the Holy Sepulcher,
and the Order of the Hospital of St. Mary of Jerusalem
(the Teutonic Knights). On the Iberian Peninsula there
were the Military Order of Calatrava, the Order of St.
James of the Sword, the Order of St. Benedict of Aviz and
others. During the 12th century, the order movement
expanded throughout Europe; in the Czech lands, the
Knights of Malta, the Knights Templar and the Teutonic
Knights were all established in that period.
Infl uenced by the successful activities of religious-
chivalric orders in the 14th and 15th centuries, European
rulers started to surround themselves with the most
faithful of their noblemen and decorated them with
visible insignia. Order societies were also gradually
founded, and membership in them was a symbol of
merit and loyalty. In England, the Order of the Garter
was founded in 1348, the Order of the Bath in 1399; in
