Další řádové dekorace byly založeny do konce
19. století králem Leopoldem II. Jednalo se původně o dva belgické řády, Řád koruny z roku 1897 a Řád Leopolda
II. z roku 1900, a dva konžské řády, Řád africké hvězdy z roku 1888 a Královský řád lva z roku 1891. Poté, co se
Kongo – původně osobní majetek krále Leopolda II. – stalo v roce 1908 belgickou kolonií, byly tyto dva řády
převzaty jako belgická vyznamenání. Další záslužné dekorace byly založeny jednak v souvislosti s bojovými
akcemi první a druhé světové války, jednak ve snaze oceňovat zásluhy ve všech sférách lidské činnosti. Díky
tomu má belgická faleristika důsledně propracovaný systém řádů a záslužných křížů a medailí, doplněný o řadu
pamětních dekorací.
Řád Leopolda (Ordre de
Léopold / De Orde van Leopold)
je nejvyšší belgické vyzna-
menání, udělované ve třech
skupinách (civilní, vojenské,
námořní) domácím občanům
i cizím státním příslušníkům. Má
celkem pět tříd, přičemž nejvyšší
z nich může být mimořádně
propůjčena s řádovým řetězem.
Belgian faleristics were developed in the 19th century, and during that time they were inspired fi rst and
foremost by the faleristics of the Napoleonic period; however, certain unique dynastic traits were taken
into account. The most important Belgian honour, the Order of Leopold I, was founded in 1832, shortly
after the country declared its independence. The decoration was based on the French Legion of Honour,
but in contrast to it was founded in independent civil and military groups; an independent maritime group
was added in 1934. Other order decorations were founded at the end of the 19th century by King Leopold
II. There were originally two Belgian orders, the Order of the Crown in 1897 and the Order of Leopold II in
1900, and two Congolese orders, the Order of the African Star in 1888 and the Royal Order of the Lion in
1891. Later, when Congo – originally the personal property of King Leopold II – became a Belgian colony in
1908, these two orders were taken over as Belgian honours. Other decorations of merit were founded, both
in relation to military acts in World Wars I and II, as well as in an eff ort to appreciate merit in all areas of
human endeavour. Because of these, Belgian faleristics have a thoroughly sophisticated system of orders
and crosses of merit and medals, complemented by a number of memorial decorations.
The Order of Leopold (Ordre de Léopold / De Orde van Leopold) is the highest Belgian honour,
bestowed in three groups (civil, military, maritime) to domestic citizens as well as foreigners. It has a total
of fi ve classes; the highest of these may be extraordinarily bestowed with the order’s chain.

apoštolům rovných Cyrila a Metoděje (založen roku 1909), Národním řádem Za civilní zásluhy (založen roku
madarského jezdce a Řádem třinácti století Bulharska.
a Řádu madarského jezdce (proměněn roku 1994). V roce 2003 potom došlo k obnovení původních bulharských
řádových dekorací, Řádu svatých Cyrila a Metoděje, Řádu Za civilní zásluhy a Řádu Za vojenské zásluhy.
The Bulgarian faleristic tradition
is connected with a renewal of the
country’s independence in the last
quarter of the 19th century, but it
relates thematically to the historic
roots of old Bulgaria in the 6th to 9th
centuries. After the creation of the
Bulgarian principality, the fi rst honours were created in 1880 and 1881, the Military Order of Bravery and
the Order of Alexander I. But only two decades later, a comprehensive system of Bulgarian decorations was
created, made up of the Order of SS. Cyril and Methodius (founded in 1909), the National Order for Civil
Merit (founded in 1891) and the National Order for Military Merit (founded in 1900). After the fall of the
monarchy in 1944, these honours also disappeared and new order decorations were created exactly on the
Soviet model. Only in the mid-1960s did elements of Bulgarian national history begin again to be promoted,
as given by the creation of the Order of the Madara Horseman and the Order of 13 Centuries of Bulgaria.
After the renewal of democracy in the country, the two state honours served as the basis for new order
decorations, the Order of Stara Planina (founded in 1994) and the Order of the Madara Horseman (altered in
1994). Then in 2003 there was a renewal of the original Bulgarian order decorations, the Order of Sts. Cyril
and Methodius, the National Order for Civil Merit and the National Order for Military Merit. It is interesting
to note that in naming of one of its highest state honours after the Slavic missionaries, the Bulgarian
national tradition meets with the Czech national tradition, and also newly with pan-European tradition.
The Order of Stara Planina (Орден Стара Планина) is the highest Bulgarian honour, granted to
Bulgarian citizens and citizens of other countries for civil and military service. It has only one group and is
conferred in three specifi cally-marked degrees (on the ribbon, 1st class and 2nd class).
