Dánská faleristická tradice patří k nejstarším
v Evropě a sahá až do poloviny 15. století, kdy
dánský král Kristián I. založil Řád slona. Užití v té
době v Evropě málo známého afrického zvířete jako
symbolu bylo velmi neobvyklé a řád si tím získal
značnou výlučnost, jež mu zůstala zachována až do
a významným dánským šlechticům. V současné době
je řád udělován téměř výlučně hlavám cizích států
a členům královské rodiny.
Markéty-Dagmar, dcery českého krále Přemysla I.)
Danish faleristic tradition is among
the oldest in Europe and reaches
back to the mid-15th century, when
Danish King Christian I founded the
Order of the Elephant. In Europe, the
use of a little-known African animal
as a symbol was very unusual at the
time, and the order gained substantial
exclusivity with it, which has remained
to this day. The explanation for the
elephant as the symbol of the Order is
most likely that a warrior elephant was
used as a symbol for the defenders of
Christianity. The statutes of the Order
were established by King Christian V on
1 December 1693. In earlier times the
Order was mainly conferred on foreign
princes and distinguished Danish
noblemen. Nowadays the Order is
almost exclusively awarded to heads of
state and members of the royal family.
The Order of Dannebrog was instituted by King Christian V in 1671,
and like the Order of the Elephant, it acquired its fi rst offi
cial statutes
on 1 December 1693. The Dannebrog is a symbol, a white cross on a red
background, which according to legend appeared before Valdemar II
(the husband of Czech Princess Markéta-Dagmar, the daughter of Czech
King Přemysl I) during a military campaign. In 1808 the statutes were
amended and extended, modelled on the French Legion of Honour,
and the Order was divided into diff erent grades. It is now mainly used
to decorate meritorious Danish citizens. Aside from these two orders,
Denmark has a number of medals intended to honour merit in a range
of work activities.
The Order of the Elephant (Elefantordenen) remains the highest
Danish honour, which is bestowed only exceptionally to the highest
foreign heads of state. It has only one class, which includes the badge
on a sash or on the order’s chain and a star.

První estonské vyznamenání, Kříž svobody,
vzniklo v únoru 1919 jen několik měsíců po
vyhlášení nezávislosti země a bylo udělováno
vojákům za statečnost v bojích. Další estonská
vyznamenání vznikala postupně ve dvacátých
a třicátých letech – v roce 1920 Řád estonského
vislosti Estonské republiky, byly všechny dřívější dekorace opětovně založeny, a to
o Estonskou republiku. Existuje v jediné skupině, má celkem pět tříd a zvláštní
třídu určenou pro hlavy států.
The fi rst Estonian honour, the Cross of Liberty, was created in 1919,
only a few months after the country declared independence. It was
conferred upon soldiers for bravery in battle. Other Estonian honours
were created gradually in the 1920s and 30s – the Order of the Estonian
Red Cross (conferred for humanitarian merit) in 1920, the Order of the
Cross of the Eagle (conferred for military merit) in 1928, the Order of
the White Star (conferred for merit the civil service) and the Order of
the National Coat of Arms as the highest Estonian honour. This period
of Estonian faleristics ended with the Soviet occupation of the country
in 1940 and the loss of state independence. The faleristic tradition,
however, remained in the country, and at the beginning of the 1990s,
after the renewal of an independent Estonian Republic, all previous
decorations were founded anew, and nearly unchanged in form, with
the same assignations and with very similar stipulations. To award
merit in most spheres of human endeavour, the Estonian government
later founded several dozen other decorations in the form of crosses
and medals of merit. In 1995, in commemoration of the 5th anniversary
of independence, an entirely new order decoration was created, based
on the medieval tradition of the region, the Order of the Cross of Terra
Marianna.
The Order of the Cross of Terra Marianna (Maarjamaa Risti Teene-
temärk) is an honour intended exclusively for foreigners, in appreciation
for their service to the Republic of Estonia. It exists in one group, has
a total of fi ve classes and a special class designated for heads of state.
